Coalition names co-ordinator
The Huron County Surface
Water Quality Coalition
(HCSWQC) has announced the
appointment of Terri Cox as
program co-ordinator. Cox is an
environmental engineering
technologist and has recently
returned from China where she
managed and facilitated a
Canadian-led. multi-agency
development project which
partnered a Canadian College with
two Chinese institutions.
The Coalition is a non-profit,
community based organization that
brings together the combined
efforts of concerned citizens and
organizations who want to improve
surface water quality and includes
representation from the Ministry of
Environment, OMAFRA, the
Ausable-Bayfield and Maitland
Valley Conservation Authorities,
the Huron County Health Units, the
HFEC, and various municipalities
and cottage associations, among
others. Key to the success of the
Coalition is community support,
co-operation and input.
The HCSWQC continues to build
upon the work of other non-profit,
community based organizations,
namely the Huron Farm
Environmental Coalition (HFEC)
which is credited with
commissioning a 1999 surface
water quality study for which it
collected and evaluated local water
quality data, and SOL-VE (Save
our Lake - Value Environment), the
organization responsible for an
extensive 1997 study of Huron
County water quality.
The studies provided a combined
total of more than 18 major
recommendations for action that
are now being formally addressed
by the established working
committees of the HCSWQC.
Action plans are being developed
in the areas of Education/
Communications, Research,
Watershed Planning, Funding and
Incentives, and Environmental
Watch and Mediation, in an effort
to develop a sustainable “Made in
Huron” solution to water quality
problems .
Collectively, the members of the
HCSWQC can carry out solutions
to improve surface water quality,
thereby reducing water-borne
diseases which affect human and
animal health, degrade recreational
waters and adversely impact the
local economy.

coalition-related activities or
