A Note from Betty
Uck - I had to scrape frost this morning and I was just starting to enjoy
those nice fall days. Oh well, life goes on.
It's good to see Mary Lowe and Sheila Richards back in community
circulation.
Rev. Ernest Dow was welcomed to Blyth United Church on Sunday
evening by many area folk. My good surprise was to find I knew his mother
Winnifred from a few years ago. So do your mother proud Ernest. I know
you will.
Fall schedules are in full swing - Brownies, dance, Guides, Cubs and
Scouts, skating, music lessons, hockey, exercises - enjoy!
Take a stroll in the falling leaves.
Bye now,
Betty G.

Bi# project
Huronlea Volunteer Auxiliary is erecting a pavillion as a special project for the International
Year of the Older Person. It has been purchased for $1,500 from the Ausable-Bayfield
Conservation Authority, which had it built on the Huron County Showcase area at the
International Plowing Match. It will be placed on the north-west side of Huronlea for the
enjoyment of the residents and visitors. Here with it are Auxiliary members Leona
Armstrong, left and Audrey Cardiff with their husbands Jim and Jack.
IPM pavilion comes to Huronlea
The Huronlea Auxiliary recently
decided to purchase a pavilion to
shade residents from the heat and
sun while eating or socializing out
doors. It was a project in recogni
tion of the International Year of the
Older Person.
The Auxiliary purchased the
pavilion constructed by the Aus
able-Bayfield Conservation
Authority for the International
Plowing Match. Monday, Sept. 27
it was moved to Huronlea.
“As our budget was limited we
are very thankful to the people who
At the Branch
helped out free of charge,” said
Audrey Cardiff, who along with her
husband. Jack as well as Jim and
Leona Armstrong spearheaded the
move.
County employee Joe Steffler
transported the pavilion on a
flatbed truck and arranged for a
police escort, okayed by Staff
Sergeant Gary Martin. The retired
officers Hal Claus and Ken Brown
lee donated their time.
Upon its arrival at the north-west
side of the county home for the
aged, the pavilion was unloaded by
tractors and help from Merle
Hoegy, Max McLellan, Allan
Cardiff and Doug Sholdice. Keep
ing watch were some of the resi
dents, “probably thinking they
could give us some suggestions on
how to get this done,” said Audrey.
To erect the pavilion the Auxil
iary is planning a work day in the
secured courtyard section of the
property. “Anyone interested in
helping hands-on or with a small
donation to help cover the costs of
a cement pad we later hope to
install, can contact Cardiff's at 887-
6457 or Armstrongs at 887-6753.
Scouts
fundraise
This year there are five Brussels
Scouts and 14 Cubs. The scout
leader is Karen Slater.
This year the scouts and the cubs
are having fundraisers for supplies
and other things. They have
decided to go to Prince Edward
Island in the year 2001 and for the
next two years they plan on having
fundraisers.
From now until the end of
November the Scouts and Cubs
will be selling Jocus Toys and
popcorn.
If you want to come and see the
toys visit the Brussels Public
School on Oct. 16.

Legion hosts successful events
By Jo Ann McDonald
What a wonderful afternoon was
enjoyed by seniors and students
alike at the Legion on Friday, Sept.
24. Thanks to the Legion veterans
for being informative and fun for
our visiting friends. Donald Dunbar
and Sandra Josling did an excellent
job of organizing the event. An
excellent story in The Citizen
explained. What an interesting
afternoon it was.
The slo-pitch tournament hosted
by the Legion was a success.
Winners were Sandy Huether's
team defeating Bryan Neill’s team.
The B champs were the
Legionnaires which defeated Sherri
McLachlan’s team and the C
champs were Rick McDonald's
team which defeated Rob Willie's.
A bus travelled to Parkwood
Hospital in London to visit and
entertain the veterans on Saturday,
Oct. 2. An enjoyable day was had
and Brussels Branch 218 sent 10
care bags filled with items useful to
the veterans. Marg Bennett of
Walton organizes this. A big
thanks, Marg.
