Taste apples at Doon
Monday Night at the Movies is
back in Wingham with four new
movies for the fall season.
For those who missed it last year,
Monday Night Movies started
when a group of movie lovers got
together to bring alternative films
to our local area. Past seasons have
blended fine Canadian and foreign
films.
Some of last year’s successes
were The Red Violin, Elizabeth and
Life is Beautiful.
The fall schedule, beginning on
Sept. 20, includes Waking Ned
Devine, an Irish comedy; Such a
Long Journey, a Canadian film

Haus hosts pie baking contest
On Saturday, Oct. 2 the
Schneider Haus is holding an apple
pie baking contest as part of the
annual Schnitzing Bee weekend.
Everyone has their own favourite
apple pie receipe - it might include
a particular variety of apple, or the
addition of another fruit such as
blueberries, or maybe the secret is
in the crust.
The rules and regulations for this
contest are few: the pie must be
homemade, it must have a pastry
crust, and it must contain apples.
There is a category for youth (ages
eight - 14) and an adult category
(ages 15 and older).
Pre-registration is not required
but all pies must be at the Joseph
Schneider Haus by 12 noon on

Dream, the latest film version of
Shakespeare's fanciful comedy;
and Tea with Mussolini, a Franco
Zeffirelli film with a cast full of
wonderful British and American
actresses.
As a completely independent
group, an informal gathering of six
to eight people pick movies that
they want to see and think others
would enjoy too. If you’re a movie
fan the group would love to hear
suggestions on films to show.
They try to keep up with reviews,
film festival news and what’s on at
the review cinemas in Waterloo
and Toronto, but it's too easy to
miss those little gems.
Saturday, Oct. 2. The judging will
begin at 12:30 and the prizes will
be awarded at 2 p.m.
All participants in the contest
will receive free admission to the
Schnitzing Bee. Activities include
pressing cider, cooking apple butter
on an outdoor fire, tasting heritage
varieties of apples, and, of course,
chopping and drying apples in the
Schnitzhaus.
Joseph Schneider Haus is located
at 466 Queen St. S., Kitchener, ON

Heritage Crossroads for an evening
of Apple Tasting on Thursday,
Sept. 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. Historic
and modern apple breeds will be
featured and participants will
sample a wide variety of flavours
and apple treats. We will explore
the history and production of
apples and learn how to store and
serve them.
For decades, apples have been
the mainstay of fruit-growing in
Canada. At the turn of the century,
many local farmers grew apples as
a side crop for market and for their
own use. Inexpensive and easy to
grow and store, apples provided
nutrition and flavour in a multitude
of foods and beverages.
At Ontario farmers’ markets and
fall fairs, one could find hundreds
of varieties, from the common
