Rev. Murray bids farewell to Duffs congregation
Teresa Haan greeted worshippers
at Duffs tinned Church on Sept.
12.
Rev. Janies Murray welcomed
everyone and opened the service
with the Call to Worship. The
Country Herbs shared their musical
talents with the congregation by
singing. One more step.
Rev. Murray announced that next
Sunday is his last Sunday in
Walton, and it will be a
communion service as well as a
dedication of Sunday School
teachers. There will be no service
in Walton on Sept. 26 as it is
Bluevale’s anniversary service.
After the children’s story, Leona
McDonald on behalf of the
congregation presented Rev.
Murray with a gift. Shannon
Gibbons gave gifts to Nathan, Scott
and Peter on behalf of the Sunday
school.
Neil Me Gavin teased Rev.
Murray about when he came here
tor the first time to a supposedly
quiet little town with small crowds
and no traffic. When Rev. Murray
attended McGavins’ 60th
anniversary, there was so much
traffic that he had a hard time
getting across the street.
Neil mentioned how appreciative
he was of James' love of music,
prompt services, making funerals,
the best that they could be under
such circumstances; devotion to his
family and of course the good
educational sermons.
Neil wished him well, then

Students off to busy start
Principal Alice McDowell
welcomed children back to school
this past week.
Mrs. Scott, the kindergarten
teacher, said their week was busy
getting acquainted with all that
goes on at school. They have talked
about bus safety and had their
pictures taken getting off the bus on
their first day of school. They are
learning the names of their bus
drivers and sang the song, Wheels
on the Bus.
The Grade l/2s are doing a unit
called, “From Family to
Community”. They created a
family constellation with
themselves in the centre and family
named on stars all around them.
Grade 3s were busy reviewing
and just getting back into the swing
of things. Mrs. Vandendool teaches
Grade 3 Math and English in the
morning and then 3/4 French in the
afternoon plus physical education
to all the grades.
Mrs. Haney said her Grade 4s
have been busy reviewing math,
plus doing reading sheets with
words related to school. They
discussed and wrote ideas about
pride in their school. Here are a
few of the children's comments.
They have a clean school, neat
classrooms, get to go on field trips,
fairs and skating. Their school has
good teachers and they get to play
outside on neat equipment.
This year all the students are
eating in the gym. There are tables
up and every class has its assigned
place to sit. Lunch time has been
changed from last year. This year
lunch begins at l l :45 a.m. -
12:45 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 16, is “Meet the
teacher” night from 5 -7 p.m. Come
on out and enjoy hot dogs and
meeting your child's teacher.
The UCW meeting took place at
Duff's United Church on
Wednesday, Sept. 8 with Heidi
McClure, Gloria Wilbee and Melva
Fraser in charge of the evening.
Marjory Humphries played the
piano while everyone sand, Walk
with Me. Mrs. Fraser read the
opening scripture and led the group
in prayer.
Since the evening was about
positive attitudes Mrs. McClure
read a story from the book Chicken
Soup for the Soul, called. Yes you
can!!
Mrs. Wilbee repeated what she
had heard Oprah Winfrey say, “If
the only prayer that you say is
Thank You. then that’s enough.”
Then with guitar in hand, she
called up Donna McClure, Heidi
McClure and Dianne McCallum
and calling themselves the
“Country Herbs” sang a song that
Gloria had written called. One
More Step. “One more step for the
journey, another prayer of hope.

Knox news
Knox United Church, Belgrave
held its 11 a.m. service with Wilma
and Ross Higgins welcoming
everyone.
The theme for children’s time
was a time to be children. Just as
Jesus loved children, all too must
take time to love children and let
children be children.
The guest speaker for the service
was Bruce Whitmore. His sermon
topic was “Don’t take it easy”
emphasizing that all must do their
part in order to live life to its
fullest.
John Dorsch and Don G. Procter
took up the offerings.
Vacation Bible School was again
a huge success with 72 children
enrolled.
invited his son Brian to come up
and give a younger person's view.
Brian agreed with Neil, that Rev.
Murray's sermons were interesting
and up to date on what was
happening in the world. He
mentioned how his children stories
kept the attention of the children
and how he found that while
listening he never once thought
about business.
Rev. Murray’s sermon was
called, “The way of forgiveness.”
Forgiveness is what Jesus gave in
abundance to everyone he met.
Forgiveness is the key to healing. It
is by the power of forgiveness that
people experience the new life, the
salvation which Jesus shares, said
Rev. Murray.
Forgiveness is important because
it has the power to change
relationships, and the power to
balance those relationships. When
someone wrongs another, they have
power over them, said Rev.
Murray.
It is only when they resolve the
relationship, and heal the wrong,
that feelings of anger and
resentment stop taking over.
“It is only when we forgive the
person, that they lose the power to
hurt us. They still might be a jerk,
but you have said to yourself, what
they did to me is wrong. But it can’t
hurt me any more. I forgive them.
This takes away their power to
control and affect you,” said Rev.
Murray.
