Jack McCutcheon this year’s Terry’s Team Member Ready to run Jack McCutcheon of Brussels will be leading the way when participants depart this Sunday on the annual Terry Rox Run. By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff Jack McCutcheon of Brussels believes in taking charge of your own well-being. The Team Member for this year’s Terry Fox Run had visited his doc tor for a routine physical examina tion in 1990 and asked about colon cancer. “He wondered why I brought it up. and I said I had heard so much about it, lately,” said McCutcheon. “I believe you have to look after yourself first. So many get into trouble because they don't ask the doctor the questions.” Whether foresight or fortunate, that examination determined there were growths, and further testing indicated that the cancer was well advanced. After a fluid-only diet for a peri od of one week, McCutcheon had surgery on Dec. 27. Following the operation he was told that without chemotherapy, he would be a high risk for further cancer. A computer study program at the London cancer clinic perscribed a year of chemotherapy, which was begun one month later, giving McCutcheon time to squeeze in a trip to the races in Daytona. Every week for one year, each day of the first week, he made the trek to London, often with his wife Esther, but frequently by himself. Though he was somewhat ill with the treatment, he never once ques tioned his decision to proceed. “I believe in preventative mainte nance so if there’s something you have to do to get healthy and stay healthy, then I'm going to do it.” Though now cancer free, the 67- year-old still has a yearly colonscopy. He has however been taken off the study, which kept tabs on his progress and compared his case to similar ones. “They kicked me out last year,” smiles McCutcheon. “They have more important things to do.” All of this has reinforced McCutcheon’s notion that nothing is too insignificant to mention when discussing your health. “Make the trip to the doctor and make sure the questions you ask are answered and that he is specific when asking you questions. I didn’t know I had a problem until after I had a problem. Once the problem was solved then I realized things hadn’t been right.” McCutcheon will be leading off this year’s Terry Fox Run in Brus sels, at I p.m. on Sept. 19 from the former Ark. Though reluctant for the public attention Terry’s Team Member receives, it was a request McCutcheon didn’t believe he could turn down. “I feel I am one of the fortunate ones. I decided I wanted to do this in memory of my sisters-in-law Barb McCutcheon and Winnifred Conaboy, who both lost their lives to cancer. That urged me on more than anything.” Pledge sheets for this year’s run are available at a number of down town merchants. Mary Martin, Pat Nolan and Marg Carswell served dinner Friday evening at the Workman home following the rehearsal for Craig Workman and Lisa Weaver's wedding. The wedding was in Brussels United Church on Saturday, Sept. 11 with a reception in the Brussels Legion. A limousine was seen delivering the wedding party to the Workman home for pictures in the garden. Guests attended from London, Milton, New Hamburg, Kitchener, Listowei, Meaford, Guelph, Goderich, Toronto, Stratford, Bayfield, Cranbrook and Brussels. Chuck and Delores and Ron and Bev Workman came from Calgary, AB to join the celebrations. Kelly, Lisa’s golden retriever, enjoyed Peter Hagedoorn’s hospitality on Saturday. Sunday a Workman family gathering was held at Frank and Kathy’s in Cranbrook. About Kelly: I had demanded, begged, cajoled Mrs. Workman to get an invitation to the wedding. She firmly told me I was NOT invited. However they did entrust me with the most important member of the family, Kelly, the golden retriever! Kelly and I had more fun together than if we had gone to the wedding! So there! Maureen Duffy visited Peter Hagedoorn from Toronto. She is always interested in seeing how the “property” is “getting together” and was duly impressed with the restoration of the old store building. Children from the neighbourhood attending Grey Central pre kindergarten are Jessica Bentley, Natasha Terpstra, Kelsey Smith and Samantha Fretz.
