Squirts win WOAA Strong pitching and great defence by catcher Blake Miller who caught led the Blyth Squirt Boys to their WOAA Consolation Championship over Chepstow. Blyth got off to a rocky start on Sept. 6 when four Chepstow batters walked, one was hit by a pitch and two runs scored. Darcey Cook took to the mound to close out the first inning and give Blyth a chance to gel back on track. The bats and hit batters quickly made up the deficit, pushing three across the plate for the lead. In the second, Brent Wheeler belt ed a triple to send Josh Albrechtas home then later scored on a passed ball. A great catch at second by Trevor Hopf in the top of the third helped limit Chepstow's comeback to one run. Up 5-3, Blyth continued to add runs while holding their opponent off the board. Blyth tallied two in the bottom of the frame before allowing Chepstow to creep closer by one in the fifth. Blyth added two in the bottom of the inning to go up 9-4 and cement the win. The final out came on a great play Rec bd. gets Head lifeguard Heather Blake attended the regular meeting Sept. 8 of the BMG board of recreation management. She reviewed some aspects of the pool staff manual with the board, noting that the manual should be revised by the pool committee before the .start of the next swimming season. She also made the board aware of some repairs that need to be done to the facilities before the start of next season. Due to the vandalism that took place during the spring, some rips in the pool need to be fixed. The temporary patches for this season are not going to last any longer. Also new water bags needed to be purchased when the pool was closed for the season. These cost approximately $24/bag. Blake indicated that the decal on the pool deck needs to be repainted. Arena Manager Murray McArter said that the wading pool needs to be sandblasted and repainted. Blake also made the board aware of some changes that need to be made, inside the building at the pool. She indicated that the floors and walls need repainted and that the boys change room requires approximately 40 - 50 new buckets to hold their clothes. These will cost approximately $3/bucket. At this time some discussion took place regarding replacing the fence at the pool and chain link fence to help deter the vandals from entering the pool area. Blake mentioned the reason the pool did not remain open until Labor Day weekend was because she did not have enough staff available to work that weekend. She also made the board aware that she will not be returning to her head lifeguard a foul tip off the screen. The fourth game went Sept. 7, with Kyle Gibson going the distance on the mound. The victory was resounding as Blyth took Chepstow 16-6 in the final game of the best-of-five series. Blyth struck early, mounting a 2-0 lead through the first half inning. Chepstow tied it up in the bottom then held Blyth scoreless through the second. Blyth blasted out of the box in the top of the third hitting for nine runs. Albrechtas smacked a homer and singles went to Wheeler, Mitch Ortman, Miller, Cook and Hopf. Kyle Procter doubled. Albrechtas and Gibson took walks. Chepstow added one in the inning and Blyth increased their lead by one in the fifth. Chepstow drew to within six in the sixth, only to slip behind again when Blyth tallied four in their next at-bat. Coaches Warren Moore, Jeff Peters and Steve Cook said the team really wanted this victory. “They went out and played a whale of a game to win the championship.” pool report position at the pool next season. Paul Gowing expressed a concern as to what the BMG arena rental agreement states with regards to the maximum number of people the auditorium holds and whether or not it states the maximum number of tickets that can be printed for an event. Secretary- Treasurer Shelly Pryce will bring a copy of the agreement to the next board meeting so that it can be reviewed and any revisions can be made. Mervyn Bauer also expressed a concern as to what authority he has when he is bartending at the arena. Pryce read a letter of thanks from the Huron County Fastball League for the board’s help with their playoff tournament. Pryce presented a profit/loss statement for the tournament bar only. The statement showed a total profit of $906.82 which will be split 50/50 with the fastball league. Mary Stretton said there had been complaints with regards to the cleanliness of the washrooms on that particular weekend. It was also brought to the board’s attention that the men’s washroom door would not shut and that one of the toilet lids in the women’s washroom was broken. Gail Semple said some tape needs to be put over the light on the freezer door in the booth, so someone doesn't accidentally put their finger in the hole and get a shock. The Board discussed hosting the Ontario Timeship 2000 event. It was the consensus that the BMG arena did not meet all the necessary criteria and requirements to host the event. Continued on page 9 The toss Ten teams enjoyed sunny skies last Thursday as they competed in the final Brussels lawn bowling tournament of the season. WOAA Senior hockey gets Wingham, Tavistock teams The WOAA Senior Hockey League will be, for the first time in their history, a single-tier program following decisions made at the annual meeting held Sunday in Wingham. Gone are the various classifications for playoffs as all teams agreed to participate as equals regardless of population. The only directive from the teams was that, in an effort to minimize travelling, the league be divided into unbalanced groups of nine and six. At the same time they increase the drawing radius to 40 km. and the number of imports to a maximum of five to compensate for the lack of available talent in many areas. While the league was saddened to learn of the folding of the Mildmay and Arthur franchises they were delighted by the addition of new entries from Tavistock and Wingham. Tavistock is returning after a one-year absence while Intermediate hockey returns to Wingham for the first time since 1986, this time under the Stainton Spitfire Banner. Joining Tavistock and Wingham in the South Division are teams from Lucknow, Goderich, Clinton, Hensail, Monkton, Milverton and Wellesley. Teams in the North Division include Wiarton, Durham, Dundalk, Shelburne, Elora, and Palmerston.
