Family restores 1958 Cockshutt for Reunion, IPM
Though the younger folk did all the
mechanical work and most of the painting,
Bell's job, according to wife Jean, was pretty
much that of gopher. “He did a lot of
running for parts.” And with the Cockshutt
being a fairly rare model. Bell noted that
locating parts can take a little longer than
with some others.
Remembering the project, Bell laughs,
“When it was‘all torn apart I kept hoping
they didn’t decide not to do it. There were
parts all over the garage.”
Roughly six weeks after work began the
tractor was ready to make its debut at the
Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion. After that
Bell hopes to ride it in the Brussels Fall Fair
parade and exhibit at the International
Plowing Match in September near
Dashwood. “If I hadn't been going to the
match I don't think I would have gone so far

It started as a hobby and now he’s going to
the show.
This summer, while holidaying at his
trailer parked at a Bayfield campground,
Wallace Bell's eye was caught by a 1958
Cockshutt 20 Deluxe, which had belonged to
the campground’s owner for 18 years. “You
could say I took a liking to it,” says the
Brussels man.
The tractor, which had been used for yard
maintenance at the park, was purchased by
Bell and moved to a garage. With family
pitching in, the task of restoring the antique
became, Beil's says, not just his hobby, but
“kind of a family project.”
