Couple sells and entertains at craft show at the reunion, Eva says the music has almost become more important than the ceramics. “We have gotten so busy playing music we forget to look after the customers. The vendor next to us will come over and complete the sale for us,” she says. The importance has become apparent also through the sale of their tapes. When it was first suggested that the van der Heides put their tunes on tape, they laughed at the idea. However, they did bring 10 cassettes to the next show. Last year, by Sunday afternoon, they had sold 230 cassettes. While Eva is proficient on the keyboards, accordion, violin and guitar, Fred plays the harmonica and bones and is in the process of learning the accordion. If you want to check out what the van der Heides have to offer, they won’t be hard to find. Just follow the music at the indoor craft show. ENTERTAINING THE SHOPPERS Eva and Fred van der Heide play their tunes while visitors to the Thresher Reunion craft show browse through the wares. By Janice Becker Citizen staff Though she professes that she and her husband are a little crazy, Fred and Eva van der Heide have been getting attention by entertaining visitors at the Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion and Hobby Show crafters' market for years. While one expects to see ceramics on display at the show, the accompaniment of keyboards, fiddle, and harmonica is less anticipated. Behind their lengthy table at the corner of the inner square of exhibitors, the van der Heides have been selling their wares and providing great music for the casual browsers. The pair, who met later in life, has been married for almost 30 years and been playing music together in a small band for over 25 years. The ceramics was added 20 years ago. Back in the late 1960s, Eva was working in London and Fred was running a dairy farm. They met at a barn dance in Dundalk. By late 1969, the couple had wed and were living on a farm near Denfield. While they have been coming to the thresher reunion for 20 years, the sharing of their musical talent has not been limited They spend two to three days each week traveling to 14 different nursing homes from St. Thomas to Grand Bend, Stratford, Mitchell, Milverton, Clinton Brunner and London, entertaining the residents. The van der Heides also keep very busy playing and singing at church services.
