Family
holidays
Chad and Natasha Terpstra
visited Storybook Gardens with
their grandparents.
Mr. and Mrs. Saxon had a
holiday at a cottage on Crow Lake.
They visited Belleville and
Peterborough. On their return they
had their family gathering in
Cranbrook to mark the end of the
holiday season.
Ben Fretz contributed to the
Cranbrook news again, telling me
that he and his sister saw the
Listowel Circus last week.
The hall board of the Cranbrook
Community Centre met to discuss
the fundraiser barbecue planned
every year. Tentative dates for this
event were set. However, most of
the meeting was spent talking about
the future of the Community Hall.
Community participation is needed
in keeping the hall business going.
The present five hall board
members have served on the board
for many years and have not been
able to recruit another member for
some time now, even when the
requirement is that six members
should sit on the hall board.
It is difficult to run twice
monthly euchre parties with only
five hall board members. This
requires a lot of time from each of
them. In order to run the euchre
parties, which are the mainstay of
income for the hall, the board needs
a wider participation of the
community.
Altogether the use of the hall has
declined. This may be a sign of the
times and the result of the changing
character of rural life. People living
in Cranbrook are employed outside
Cranbrook and their social
activities are also conducted
outside Cranbrook. It would be
easy to just let the hall fall into
disuse and disrepair. ,
It is felt by the hall board
however that once one loses the
hall it will be difficult to establish
other public spaces for meetings,
gatherings and community events.
The hall board decided to send a
letter to the community asking for
participation in the operation of the
hall. Community participation is
needed!
