Grey taxes drop 2.8 per cent from 1998
Grey Twp. council held its
regular meeting on Aug. I6 and
passed a bylaw adopting their 1999
tax rates. Property tax bills will be
issued the last week of August and
will be due as a single installment
on Sept. 30. Property owners will
see their 1999 taxes decrease 2.8
per cent from 1998.
A draft restructuring proposal
with the Village of Brussels,
conditional on approval from the
village, was endorsed. The proposal
will be forwarded to both the
County of Huron and the Ministry
of Municipal Affairs with it also
being noted that Brussels and Grey
are presently involved in
restructuring discussions with the
Town of Seaforth and the Twps. of
McKillop and Tuckersmith.
Council approved a grant
application to the Ministry of the
Solicitor General under JEPP (Joint
Emergency Preparedness Program)
for the estimated $6,000 cost to
install a backup power supply at the
municipal building.

U-9 Bullets take shootout
On Monday, Aug. 9 the U-9
Brussels Bullets had a playoff
game against Drayton.
Cody Subject playing centre and
forwards Lacey McArter and
Devan Warwick kept the ball
passing into the Drayton end after
the kick. Drayton got the ball
moving toward the middle of the
field but the halfbacks, Jolanda
Smith and Melinda Dorsch moved
it back to the forwards where some
shots on net were made.
Jodi McIntosh and Kyle Bateman
moved quickly on defence to keep
the ball passing back into the
Drayton end. McArter moved
quickly on a pass and made the
goal for Brussels. Justin Pipe made
great saves for the first half and
kicked the ball back into action.
In the second half Chesley
McLellan, Kirsten McArter and
Pipe had great control of the ball
passing and taking shots on net.
The goalie however, was quick at
jumping on the ball and kicking it
back into action where Patrick and
Kaylea Brunk made some kicks
back up to the forwards.
The game ended in a tie so a
shootout took place. Subject in net
made great saves keeping the ball
out and McIntosh put one in
putting them on the A side for the
tournament on Saturday.
Saturday, Aug. 14 Brussels
hosted the North Perth Soccer
tournament with a lot of action on
every field in town.
The U-9 Bullets played against
Howick at the ball park on the A
side. Scott and Peter Murray moved
the ball up where Wade Stephenson

third when they pushed two across
only to see Hullett build their lead
with four runs in their next at bat.
Joel Salverda popped a round-trip
per for Hullett.
Shut out in the fourth, Blyth
allowed five runs in the frame, giv
ing Hullett a 17-2 lead.
The Blyth bats came alive in the
fifth when they tallied seven, but
the effort came too late. Hullett
added six to close out the game.
Sharing time on the mound were
Anthony Wilts, Salverda. Derek
Dolmage, Radford and Watkins.
Hullett came up against a strong
Goderich Twp. team for their sec
ond match of the day.
After two innings, the teams
were tied at seven, due in part to a
grand slam smashed by Hullett’s
Josh Nurse in the bottom of the
inning.
With Goderich Twp. tallying four
in the third, Hullett edged ahead for
the first time when they put five on
the board including a homerun
from Dolmage.
Their opponents captured the
lead in the next at bat then held on
as they limited Hullett’s runs to
one.

goal and making great shots on net.
Subject moved quickly with the
ball going by the defence to score.
The whole team played hard
during the game with a lot of great
passing and moves but Howick
sneaked around with their players
for one goal ahead.
On Monday, Aug. 16 the Bullets
took on their parents for a fun game
at the school. Max McLellan, Kim
McArter and Dave Stephenson did
some of their time in net to try and
make some saves.
Bev Subject, Murray Pipe and
Karen Smith tried hard but the
opposition had the moves and were
quick to pass through Ken
Warwick and Julie Brunk for goals.
Glenda Batemen was put to the
ground by the quick legs.
witn a lot of contact and Barb
McLellan’s defensive work a fun
night was enjoyed by the team and
parents.
The parents took their defeat
while the kids all enjoyed their
sundaes the coaches served up.

Down 14-13, Hullett scored four
in the fourth then kept Goderich
Twp. to one for the eventual 19-15
win.
Wilts, Salverda, Dolmage and
Radford pitched.
Hullett challenged Bayfield for
the A championship in a tight game
which was decided by the final at-
bat.
Hullett fell behind early when
they allowed Bayfield to rack up
seven in the first two innings.
They jumped back in in the third
with six runs only to see Bayfield
add four.
Behind 11-6 going into the fifth,
Hullett kept nibbling at the lead
with four in the fifth, including a
Radford homer, and three in each
of the sixth and seventh. They were
able to hold Bayfield to just three
runs to take the lead and the victory
with the 16-14 score.
Wilts, Dolmage and Radford
took turns on the mound.
Coach Doug Dolmage said, “The
children played great defence and
knew when to get the bats going.
Good sportsmanship was shown
throughout the year.”
“Thanks to the children, helpers
and parents, we had a great year.”
