He and his wife,-Lil, were the letter carriers in the Cranbrook area. He was a very friendly, helpful and conscientious man. He will be missed. EthelThe news from Compiled by Margaret McMahon Phone 887-9250 McKillop Twp. council was pre­ sented with a proposal for a fitness complex at the Aug. 4 meeting. Terry Johnston, representing a group from Seaforth, said the school board currently sets up and takes down for any meetings held in the gym at the board office at Seaforth District High School. The group proposes that the board is given the space and the gym facility is moved. A structure supplied by Cover- All would cost $650,000 to $700,000, said Johnston. Council had questions about the option of a brick and mortar build­ ing and liability. Johnston said he is just making council aware of the facility and was looking for support of the endeavor. He hoped a letter could be forwarded to Lome Rachlis, Director of Education at the Avon Maitland District School Board. A motion was passed supporting the concept of a recreation facility Euchre results Ethel euchre Aug. 9 was hosted by Dorothy and alien Martin. There were 14 tables in play. The next euchre is on Aug. 23 at 8:30 p.m. 4-Hers meet By Yvonne De Wit On Thursday, Aug. ^at 7 p.m. at the Grey Township Shed, Ethel - St. Columbian 4-H held its first meeting of the Judging Club. While members filled out the enrollment sheets, Elizabeth De Wit, leader, gave an introduction of the club. Then Cynthia De Wit did a mixer game that tested powers of observation. When that was finished they voted on the club executive, which is as follows: president, Leanne Murray; vice-president, Erica Murray; secretary, Dianne Murray; press reporter. Heather Murray, Yvonne De Wit. Mrs. DeWit explained what members were judging and split them into two groups. The one group went to the class of chocolate chip cookies, the other group to the class of photos. They switched classes. The club name is the Ethel Columbian Jughead Judges. The second meeting was at the Seaforth Judging Competition on Aug. 10. At 6:30 p.m. the president of Huron County 4-H Leaders Association, Bryon Black gave the introduction and told them what the classes were. They split into nine groups forjudging. for Seaforth. Council approved an insurance quote from Jardine OME including an increase in the coverage for Blyth and district firefighters. Cov­ erage would rise from $100,000 to $200,000 at a total cost of $806.76. McKillop Twp.’s share is $86.08 including PST. Council provisionally accepted the engineer’s report for Bolton 2 Drain with the court of revision set for Sept. 1 at 7:30 p.m. Items presented to council included information which stated 9-1-1 would be operational by September, 2000 and that the Huron Adult Day Centre had received funding of $10,000 through the Advance Lottery Fund­ ing program. A bylaw was passed to establish to reduce load limits for the protec­ tion of certain highways in the township. A bylaw amendment was also passed for the construction of the Hamilton Drain. Council agreed to write-off drainage maintenance fees of less that $5 to general funds. Clerk-Treasurer Jack McLachlin told council that property owned by Mr. Nash had been sold and that the farm tax rebate had not been received. McLachlin contacted the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and they are agree­ able to having the property reassessed. Road and general accounts, in the amounts of $41,797.92 and $272,809.62 were approved for payment. Council endorsed a resolution from Essex County asking the fed­ eral government to bring forward a comprehensive infrastructure pro­ gram for municipalities which will be funded equally by the federal, provincial and local governments. Support was given to a resolution from the Town of Gananoque regarding the reinstatement of the teaching of the Golden Rule in schools. Council supported the Municipal­ ity of Arran-Elderslie in their peti­ tion to the provincial government for the reinstatement of a fair fund­ ing systerh for the capital mainte­ nance and restoration of our community centres and arenas. Council supported a resolution from Colborne Twp. asking the province to simplify the existing process in order to maintain a sys­ tem that accurately calculates and reflects the cost of Farm Tax Rebate and Managed Forest pro­ grams. There were no objections to the Canadian Institute for the Blind selling raffle tickets in the township Continued on page 16 Graduation went then - St. Graduation Sheri Huether, daughter of Brian and Dianne, passed the Certified Management Accounting Examination. She has entered the C.M.A. Professional Program and accepted an Assistant Controller position at HFL Trucking in Cambridge. Sheri graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario and continued her education at Wilfrid Laurier University. Congratulations Sheri. We are very proud of you. Competing against a team from the Seaforth- Clinton-Brucefield area, they were amongst several local groups who got together in Blyth on the weekend for the Sight First slo-pitch tournament. Don and Joyce Jacklin are very pleased to announce the graduation of their daughter Janice from the Legal Office Administration program at Fanshawe College in London. BRENT PEPPER Brent Leslie, son of Murray and Sandra Pepper, graduated from the Fitness and Health Promotion Program, on the President's Honour Roll, at Fanshawe College, London, on June 18, 1999. Brent is a former graduate of Brussels Public School and F.E. Madill Secondary School, Wing­ ham. He has since received his Personal Trainer Certificate and is currently working* as a Personal Trainer for "Body by Jane" in London. Congratulations, Brent on a job well done.
