Brussels Tigers capture first title since 70s The Brussels Tigers captured the "B" Division title at (he 28th Annual Brussels Tigers Fastball tournament. The title marked the first time a Brussels squad has earned a title since the Richie's Rockets turned the trick in the '70s. Brussels opened the tourney with a 3-1 loss to the Wroxeter Rippers on Friday night. Doug Conley plated the only run for the Tigers with a solo homer to left. Shawn Conley went the distance on the hill allowing six hits and fanning five Rippers. With the loss, the Tigers moved to the consolation round where they met the Mitchell Chiefs. Brussels went to work with the bats early and often scoring three in the first and five in the second to chase Mitchell starter Steve Cook. Brussels then exploded for eight in the fourth and one in the fifth to make the final 17-2. Doug Conley pitched allowing only five hits and whiffling six Chiefs. With the win the Tigers advanced to the semi-final game to face arch rivals, the Walton Brewers. Walton hit the score sheet in the top of the first as Steve Knight hit a homer to left scoring a Jeff Robinson double ahead of him. The Brewers chased three more in their half of the second as a walk to Greg Clark, a Robinson double and a Steve Knight single gave the Putting the bat on the ball Cooler temperatures and light winds provided great conditions for a slo-pitch tournament held in Blyth on the weekend. The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the frame as Tim Fritz plated Ron Strome and Greg Fritz to make the score 5-2 after two. Brussels tied the game at five in the third as Steve Fritz tripled in Steve Thomas who had singled. Strome then smashed a homer to centre to knot the contest at five. Walton regained the lead with three runs in the fourth as singles by Robinson, Knight and Rick McDonald produced three runs to make the score 8-5. The advantage was short lived as the Tigers counted three of their own as hits by Tim Fritz, Greg Mulvey and a Moe Pipe walk were plated on hits by Doug Conley and Ken Higgins. The Brewers added a single run in the fifth as Clark scored Brad Knight to give Walton a 9-8 lead with the Tigers down to their last three outs. Greg Fritz led off with a walk and went to second on a Pipe single. Tim Fritz was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out. Pinch hitter Doug Shaw then cashed two with a single up the middle to give the Tigers a hard fought 10-9 win. Doug Conley went all the way for Brussels while Rick McDonald, John Huether and Scott Leonhardt all saw time on the hill for the Brewers. With the win It all starts with newspapers the Tigers advanced to the finals to battle the Camlachie Sox. The Sox opened the scoring in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Tigers hit the board in the bottom of the second as Pipe scored Consolation champs The Brussels Tigers scored a 2-1 decision over the Camlachie Sox to win the consolation title of the 28th annual Brussels invitational fastball tournament held during the Civic holiday weekend. (Wingham Advance-Times) Walton PeeWees earn win After falling behind early, the Walton PeeWee Girls tri-county team had to make a comeback to overtake Gowanstown, July 27. The visitors tallied seven in the first then held Walton off the board. Already down 8-0 in the bottom of the second, Walton blasted their opponent for 13 runs and the lead. Mandy Mitchell led off with a walk and was brought in by a Car­ rie Leonhardt, homer. Krista Shortreed walked as did Melissa Beuermann, setting up an RBI opportunity for Jessica Lub­ bers who doubled. Lions show off moves On Wednesday, Aug. 4 the Brussels Lions played against team 5 at the arena. With the team members playing different positions throughout the game they showed a lot of great moves. Kelsey Rathwell, Janessa Smith and Josh Raynard kept the ball out of their end defensively. Brussels I U-9s split with Elma The Brussels U-9 I soccer squad split their two-game matchup against Elma. Elma downed Brussels 4-2, July 26, as they had the offensive edge and the Brussels team struggled. Though they made great shots, they came up short. Scoring for Brussels were Continued on page 10 Doug Conley and Ron Strome to make the score 2-1. Both teams threatened but either team could count on making the final 2-1. Shawn Conley handled the mound duties allowing five hits and Missy Souch’s walk was fol­ lowed by Crystal Gibbons being put on base. Jen McClure doubled and Sarah McDonald and Michelle Cook sin­ gled. Mitchell took a second walk before Leonhardt and Beuermann singled. Though Lubbers was put out try­ ing to stretch a tnple into a home- run, she earned three RBIs. Gowanstown nibbled at the lead, scoring two in the third and three in the fourth, but it was not enough to steal Walton’s 15-13 win. They kept the ball moving with some great passes to Kody Higgins and Kane White who moved quickly keeping the ball in the other end where Jenelle Smith kept the ball rolling, passing it in front of the net for Alex Raynard to make a couple of goals. Then Curtis White made a great steal away with the ball where he moved it forward to Nick Siebert who kicked it towards Jacob McGavin who moved quickly, keeping the ball in control to make another goal for the Lions. Great plays by Lubbers, Mitchell, McClure and Cook as well as McDonald on the mound earned several outs. Leonhardt was steady behind the plate. Hullett Mites win 12-10 The Hullett Mites were on the winning end of a storm-shortened match against Clinton July 28. Though called after one hour due to lightning, Hullett had captured a 12-10 win in three innings. Nicole Greidanus hit her first homer of the season while Anthony Wilts and Eric Radford each added a round-tripper to the tally. Wilts, Bradley Lapp and Derek Dolmage shared pitching duties.
