Since early February, $24.8 million has been distributed to 2,470 farmers in need. Ontario farmers who have already applied for assistance should have received supplemental information and application forms in the mail for the federal portion. Producers making an initial application may use the original application form they received in January, along with the supplemental package to apply to both the federal and provincial portions of the program simultaneously. The program is designed to help farmers deal with the unexpected events of 1998, including a serious, worldwide market downturn and severe, but isolated, weather- related incidents. It is available to all eligible producers, regardless of commodity. Further information regarding the program is available by calling, toll-free, 1-877-838-5144, by visiting the web site at www.gov.on.ca/omafra, or by visiting the field offices of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. To best reveal how a bull’s genetics can affect daughters, event organizers have organized a new attraction - a progeny review. Several dairy farmers will be entering cows in this non competitive display. The cows will be daughters of two of the Holstein breed’s top bulls: Robthom Integrity, a well-respected superior type sire, and, Second-Look Jolt, Canada’s highest ‘New Class Extra’ sire. The progeny review gives farmers and spectators a chance to see a bull’s genetics are truly reflected in his daughters. It’s valuable information for dairy farmers who often rely solely on genetic indexes and classification numbers when breeding their cows.
