Lightning misses Elma edges Brussels 1-0 Blyth Atom Lightning split recent soccer action with a victory at home and a loss away. On July 19, the squad hosted the Clinton Cougars. The first half had Josh deGans, Kerissa Van Amers- foort and Levi Cook with two putting Blyth out to an early lead. Clinton got on the board scoring two in the second: Then Krys Campbell found the net for Blyth to end the scoring. Goaltender for Blyth was Mark Blyth Squirts beat Walton The Blyth and Walton Squirts met in baseball action in Walton on July 19. The home squad had the visitors running after the first inning with a 4-1 lead, but Blyth came up with six in the second to take a big jump ahead. The force continued in the third with Blyth tallying seven to Wal­ ton’s two. The home team kept pace in the fourth scoring seven to Blyth’s seven, but it wasn't enough to get them back in the game. Blyth was happy to see Josh Albrechtas back after four weeks off with a broken wrist. On July 22 the Blyth Squirts played Wroxeter at home and were defeated 8-3. Coach Moore noted that the defense was incredibly strong keep­ ing the Wroxeter team scoring at a minimum. “It’s a great tune-up with WOAA playoff beginning next week. This i^the time of year to play good ball and that was a good example of that.” PeeWee Girls win 19-7 Walton PeeWee Girls showed Listowel w.ho was boss, winning 19-7, at home July 20. With Michelle Cook on the mound, Listowel was shutout in the top half of the first. Walton scored eight to take a huge lead early. With Listowel only able to man­ age one more in the second, Walton answered with nine for a com­ manding lead. Listowel’s third only brought them one run closer, but their defense improved holding Walton to two. In the visitors fourth they tallied five runs before the third out. Walton’s offense was highlighted by a Jen McClure homer in the sec­ ond. Manager Deb Cook said. “The Walton Girls hit well and with good fielding deserved the win." McCracken, who stopped four shots on the net. Assisting on goals were Cook, Campbell and McClinchey. On July 22, it was turnabout at Goderich Legion shutout Blyth 6-0. During the first half there were six shots on the Blyth goalie which were stopped and one shot in the second half that was stopped. Blyth had many excellent oppor­ tunity at the Goderich net, but the adroit skill of the goalie kept them at bay. Wade Stephenson, playing centre, gave the ball an excellent kick to pass to Justin Pipe playiAg forward. They made some quick passes to their right forward, Chelsey McLellan. They all moved the ball well, but the Elma goalie was quick with the hands. Jodi McIntosh and Kristen McArter were fast on their feet getting the ball away from Elma and kept the ball passing. Scott Murray and Devan Warwick were ready in their defence area and kicked the ball quickly back down into the Elma end where Cody Subject and Peter Murray were prepared and moved quickly with some more shots at the net. McLellan made some great throw-ins as Lacey McArter got control and moved the ball down into Elma’s end. Jolanda Smith and Patrick Brunk made some quick knee stops keeping the ball in the Elma end as Kaylea Brunk passed the ball forward. Stephenson was primed with his fancy feet and knee work to keep the ball and steal it away Pre-Mites win big On Tuesday, the Brussels Pre­ Mites travelled to Wingham for their second road game of the season. In the first inning Brussels scored six runs as Westin McLeod and Brianne Wheeler hit homeruns. However, Wingham roared back with six runs of their own to tie the score. In the second inning Brussels notched four with Dustin Lichty hitting a homerun. Wingham countered with three runs in their half of the inning to make the score 10-9 for Brussels. In the third inning Brussels continued their hot hitting, scoring from a couple of Elma players. As Kyle Bateman had it quiet in goal, he made some great long kicks to the forwards but near the end of the game one shot moved quickly into the net, where it ended 1-0 for Elma. Brussels will travel to Newton on Monday, Aug. 2 for their last game. 7 runs. Brendan Stretton and Lichty with his second of the game hit homeruns to lead the attack. Brussels’ defense strengthened and held Wingham off the scoreboard to increase their lead to 17-9. In the final inning Brussels scored another six runs. McLeod notched his second homerun of the game. In their final at-bat Brussels held Wingham to three runs to make the final score 23-12. The victory improves the Pre­ Mite’s record to a perfect six and 0 for the season.
