Blyth council briefs Deadline a worry A young man does a little last minute polishing as he prepares Grant Sparling’s antique fire trucks for their call to duty. As well as being on display Friday, judges for the communities in bloom competition where chauffeured around the village and to outlying areas to view the hard work put in by residents. Seniors enjoy potluck About 19 Seniors gathered at the Lions Park for their annual picnic on Wednesday, July 21. At noon they sat down to a potluck picnic luncheon. Following this, President Lawrence Plaetzer called a short meeting to order. He thanked all for attending. There were no birthdays or anniversaries in July. Feme Howatt and Enid MacDonald have birthdays in August. The usual reports were given. A nominating committee was formed to bring in the new officers for the meeting, Sept. 29. Lawrence read a few good jokes and then called on the program committee. Isabelle Craig, Janet Lawrie, Jean Nethery, Mary Walden and Jean and Lawrence Plaetzer conducted some great games and contests. All enjoyed this very much. Several people received prizes as well. It was a beautiful day and all had a good time. Obesity and related factors in breast cancer Studies have shown that obesity in breast cancer patients is associated with poor survival. Dr. Pamela Goodwin is attempting to confirm this theory via a clinical study. More than 500 women with newly diagnosed breast cancer have been enrolled in this study and information gathered about their weight, body metabolism and lifestyle factors as well as their cancers and treatments. The women in the study are being tracked to see which experience a cancer recurrence. If the results show that obesity increases the risk of breast cancer recurrence and death, further studies may be done to determine whether weight loss can lower the risk. Blyth Specialized packages & gift certificates The timing of amalgamation sub missions was on the table at the July 20 session of Blyth council. With a county deadline of Sept. 1 for submitting plans, Blyth Clerk- Treasurer John Stewart informed council that, in his understanding, the plans would be dealt with as they arrived. If, for example, some other group submitted a plan with Howick Twp. included and it was approved, a North Huron plan involving Howick could not pass. Any further restructuring would then have to wait two years. Council agreed that a great deal of work needed to be undertaken to try to meet the Sept. 1 deadline. *** In a review of their insurance coverage, council noted that premi ums had dropped by half in the last few years. This year’s policy holder will be Jardine OME. *** Bills and accounts totalling $166,563.06 were approved for payment. *** There were no objections to the Huron Pioneer Thresher reunion or the Blyth Lions club slo-pitch tour nament being designated a commu nity festival.
