Area people attend funeral
Close call
Three area people were taken to hospital following a head-on collision near Londesboro last

Letter to the editor
Writer responds to county
THE EDITOR,
I would like to respond to the
article appearing in The Citizen on
July 14, regarding the rent increase
to the Huron Adult Day Centre
located in Tuckersmith Twp.,
behind Huronview Home for the
Aged.
The reeves in the north of the
county seem to have an obsession
with facts and figures which have
little or no relevance to the issue
being debated. Comparing the
facilities housing the HADC and
the Wingham and Area Seniors
Day Centre is NOT an ‘apples to
apples’ issue.
What kind of a comparison is a
relatively new commercial building
(in Wingham), to a 45-year-old
publicly owned building paid for
by taxpayers money? A building
which was in a deplorable state of
(non) repair, and slated for
demolition until promised to the
Huron Adult Day Centre in 1991
for $1, for renovation as an Adult
Day Centre.
The questions about usable space
are like comparing ‘apples to
oranges'. The Wingham Day
Centre has 3,500 sq. ft. of
wonderful space, every foot of
which is usable. The Centre was
built for a very specific purpose, to
house the day programme. The
space allows for a capacity of 20 -
25 clients.
On the other hand we have the
Mighty Mites
win big
Huge hits and a continuous attack
led the Hullett Mites to a 28-11 win
over Colbome Twp.
Of their eight runs in the top of
the first inning, three came on
homers off the bats of Lee Watkins,
Bradley Lapp and Joel Salverda.
Colborne drew to within one as
they tallied seven in their at-bat.
Slowed only slightly in the sec
ond, Hullett added five with the
help of an Eric Radford round trip
per.
As Hullett held Colbome to just
one run through the second and
third, they brought their total to 20
with seven more.
Salverda popped his second
homerun of the game then added a
third in the fourth inning.
Hullett went out in front 28-8
before Colborne took their last
swings at the ball.
Pitching for Hullett were Salver
da, Kody Reid, Radford and Derek
Dolmage.
old Summerhill Wing of
Huronview, of which 11,000 sq. ft.
is in daily use by the HADC. In this
space HADC operates two separate
programmes simultaneously, with a
total capacity for 45 clients daily. It
also includes a kitchen which
produces approximately 200 meals
weekly for four sites, a shared
boardroom, offices, six washrooms,
health and quiet rooms and storage
space as well as the areas used for
client activities.
There are also approximately
2,300 sq. ft. of long, wide hallways,
not considered to be usable space.
The above information should
help answer Reeve McBurney, and
the others who question why
HADC needs 11,000 sq. ft. If they
want to use the same criteria as
they do for the Wingham Centre,
then HADC needs at last 7,000 sq.
ft.
They should also remember that
when the building was renovated,
both the HADC and the Ministry
were of the .understanding that the
county had made a commitment to

turn the building over to the HADC
for its exclusive use as a seniors
complex. Therefore, the amount of
space that was necessary for the
Day Centre was never an issue.
In all of this debate, however we
should not forget that the HADC is
at the forefront of providing care to
our increasingly elderly population,
and serves the people of the county
of Huron. Perhaps, if all of those
councillors, who sit in judgement
in our operations, would care to
take the time to come and see our
agency, they would get a much
better idea of what is going on.
Surely the type of space and other
aspects of the issue being debated,
should be considered before
making public statements and
comparisons which appear to be
nothing more than an attempt to
cast a very poor light on the Huron
Adult Day Centre, and confuse the
real issue of the outrageously high
increase in rent being demanded.
Sincerely,
Rosemary Armstrong
Executive Director.
Ruth Johnston and Margaret
Higgins greeted worshippers at
Knox United Church on Sunday,
July 11.
The guest speaker, Melissa
Whitmore, welcomed the
congregation.
Children’s time centered around
a garden and how to make a garden
grow. Miss Whitmore asked the
children what they would like to be
when they grow up. Like the
garden, she said, they have to learn
to work to become what they would
