PAGE 16. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 14, 1999. Foundation recognizes rural excellence For the first time ever, a comprehensive awards program is being launched in rural Ontario. The Foundation for Rural Living’s Awards of Rural Excellence will recognize out standing efforts that are strengthening rural communities across the province. The awards are in response to a growing number of initiatives in rural Ontario. “We’re seeing a lot of exciting work going on in rural Ontario, and we want to honour the efforts made by communities and organiza tions,” says Eugene Lammerding, chair of the Foundation for Rural ILiving. “The first annual Awards of Rural Excellence is a great way to showcase successes in rural communities.” The Foundation for Rural Living is a non-profit, ’ charitable organization dedicated to building healthy, sustainable rural communities and enhancing the agricultural industry in Ontario. This has given the foundation hands-on experience working in rural communities. The foundation has developed the Awards of Rural Excellence to recognize and encourage activities that will keep rural communities strong. There are eight award categories: Excellence in Community Leader ship; Outstanding Partnership; ‘Rural Youth in Action’ Achieve ment; Contribution to Economic Growth; Excellence in Developing a Strategic Community Action Agenda; Excellence in Formal Co operative Models; Outstanding Volunteerism; and Innovation in Community Economic Develop ment. “We have seen first-hand the value and importance of keeping rural communities healthy,” said Lammerding. “An annual awards program will promote more initiatives that improve the quality of life in rural Ontario.” The efforts being recognized with each award must take place in rural Ontario. ‘Rural’ includes communities with a population under 50,000. Amalgamated rural municipalities where the population may exceed 50,000 are also eligible. An independent selection committee made up of practitioners in each field will help in the selection process. Nomination forms must be submitted to the Foundation for Rural Living by Sept. 15. For more information or nomination forms, please contact Cindy Lindsay, executive director of the foundation at 1 Stone Rd. West, Guelph, ON NIG 4Y2. (Ashiey Gropp photo) Stevensons celebrate A family celebration was held on July 11 at the home of Stuart and Eleanor Stevenson, RR2, Brussels to honour the couple on their 50th wedding anniversary. The Brussels Presbyterian manse was the setting July 2, 1949 for the ceremony uniting the former Eleanor Hodges of Toronto and her groom. Rev. George A Milyne offi ciated. The maid of honour was Dorothy (Bird) Gorden, while Lorna (Hodges) Cummins, the bride’s sis ter and Jean (Bird) Ives, the bride’s cousin were her attendants. Best man was Ronald Gorden. For the hardworking farm couple there was no honeymoon as they married on Saturday and baled hay on Monday. While Eleanor was a busy house wife, Stuart was employed as a farmer and carpenter. The couple have four children, Fred, Tom, Sharon and Anna Lee and are the proud grandparents of nine and great-grandparents of three. The Stevensons are members of Knox Presbyterian Church in Cran brook. Those attending the golden cele bration on Sunday travelled from Whitby, Oshawa, Toronto, Credi- ton, Walton, Scranton, PA, Brus sels and Seaforth. A buffet supper was enjoyed. Entertainment was provided by the Paul Brothers and Shirley. Quill aids workers Continued from page 13 doesn’t include the OSSD. MacDonald is hoping to work with a variety of small and large businesses, including service organizations and manufacturers, over the next couple months. Through focus groups, surveys and interviews, it is hoped a valuable marketing tool will be developed that will be useful for employers as well as potential employees. After it is tested with employers from Grey, Bruce, Huron, Perth and Georgian Triangle, it will be packaged and promoted to other rural areas of Ontario. While this project and marketing tool is designed to help older workers be more competitive in the workforce, it is not intended to promote dropping out of school to today’s youth. “This tool will have a limited run,” explain Cindy Davidson, QUILL network executive director. “There are many adults over the age of 35 who are out of work and don’t have a Grade 12 diploma, but they have been working very hard in adult upgrading programs and are able to demonstrate the skills they have. Employers just don’t know about this valuable work because it hasn’t been promoted enough. That’s what this project is designed to do, with, hopefully, positive results for older workers.” “But the emphasis with youth who still have an opportunity to finish high school is that is still their best option,” said Davidson. A 1997 environmental scan conducted by the Training board showed tlTSt 43 per cent of this region’s population does not have a high school diploma. Of that figure, over 50 per cent are workers aged 45 and older. The project is expected to be completed by March 2000. Any employers interested in participating in the research and/or testing phase can contact QUILL Network at 1-800-530-6852 or e- mail to info@quillnet.org CLASSIFIED MARKETPLACE "Advertise Across Ontario or Across the Country" EDUCATIONAL OPPS.
