Brussels council briiffs Sidewalk budget gets boost A Note from Betty Ah the days of summer - time for smelling the flowers, visiting with friends, hitting the beach and savouring garden vegetables. Aren’t we the lucky ones. Take time this week: - to stop and sit and be thankful for our Homecoming gazebo and greenery - to listen to the squeals of delight at the pool - to admire the white clothed folk at lawn bowling - to envy the skill of our players at the ball parks - to enjoy the energy and enthusiasm of our soccer players - to watch the Maitland flow Yes, we need to count our many blessings - the land and climate, the peace, the people. So on with summer. Enjoy the camps, the theatre, the festivals, the shows, the events. They are all in full swing ready for your presence. Deputy Clerk-Trea surer Lon Pipe said that though the COMING EVENTS at the BRUSSELS LEGION Bye now, Betty G. Council reconsiders decision on prayer By Bonnie Gropp - Citizen staff Brussels council at its July 5 meeting reconsidered an earlier decision following a request from Deputy Clerk-Treasurer Lori Pipe. At the June session of council, a resolution from the Twp. of Leeds and Landsdowne petitioning the provincial and federal govenrments to reinstate Bible readings in schools was not supported. As a Catholic, Pipe said she had the option of sending her children to a separate school. However, to this point she had enrolled them the local public school in the town where the family resides and where she works. “But if I don't see a return to val ues in the school I will consider switching,” she said. And moving to a new school usually results in an economic spin-off as parents often travel there and inevitably spend money in the community.” Councillor Greg Wilson said he felt that religion should be optional. Pipe responded that saying The Lord’s Prayer when she attended elementary school was never forced on children. “And I don’t think exposure to others saying it harms anyone.” Also, she noted that the village has five churches. “I think there’s a strong religious background here. Perhpas in the city this might be a problem, but here though we may have many different religions there are no different beliefs in our God.” Councillor Mary Stretton pointed out that for many children school may be the only opportunity to hear The Lord's Pray’er. Wilson said, “I don’t think valu able school time is the place to teach religion. But if all you want is to have The Lord’s Prayer said in class, I have no problem with it.” Council supported the resolution unanimously by motion.
