June ends with a bang
for Blyth Squirt Boys
U-9 team holding its own in league play
The Blyth Squirt Boys ended
June with a bang as they took two
games against Walton teams.
On Monday, the Walton B squad
came to town and were met by a
pumped team.
Pitcher Darcey Cook snagged a
ball hit straight back to him and a
quick throw to Anthony Peters at
first earned the first out of the
game.
Matt Goooall made a nice
attempt on a pop fly, but got the out
with a great throw to Peters.
Allison George’s pop fly catch
ended the top of the first.
Blyth blasted onto the field when
Cook led of with a homer and
Mitch Ortman followed up with a
round-tripper thanks to an error.
Kyle Procter tripled and Peters
walked.
Goodall got on base with a sin
gle, then stole second and third and
followed Peters’ example with a
steal home.
Nick Stryker hit first base when
the catcher passed on a third strike.
He also stole three bases to score.
With three Walton' strikeouts in
the second, Blyth went into the bot
tom of the inning up 6-0.
Kyle McNeil led of with a walk
then was pushed home when Cook
doubled and crossed the plate on
errors.
Ortman, Blake Miller and
Goodall singled with walks from
Procter and Peters sandwiched in
between. There was a total of 13
stolen bases in the inning.
Blyth added seven more in the
third off singles by Ortman and
Procter, a double by Miller, triples
from Cook and Goodall and walks
taken by Stryker and George.
Ortman made a solid play at third
when he tagged out a runner trying
to steal.
After a pop fly out, Goodall
replicated Oilman’s move by tag
ging a runner going into second.
Blyth brought their run total to
27 when they pushed seven home
in the last at-bat.
Eric Caldwell began with a walk,
followed by singles from McNeil
and Cook. Ortman smacked a dou
ble with Procter and Peters singles
pushing him home.
Miller singled and Goodall
closed out the hitting with a double.
Walton scored five runs through
out the contest.
The following day, Blyth had a
much tougher battle when they
challenged the Walton A squad.
Shutting out Walton in the first
Blyth tallied one on a walk issued
to Trevor Hopf, who then came
home on successive strikeouts.
Blyth enlarged the lead in the
second when they racked up seven.
Peters got the rally going with a
single, followed by a triple off the
bat of Miller.
Four walks given to George,
Stryker, Caldwell and McNeil
added to the total before Hopf
tripled and Goodall singled.
Walton had tacked on four for
the 7-4 score.
The teams swapped scoring tal
lies in the third as Walton brought
their number up to ll and Blyth
added four to take a 12-11 lead.
Ortman, Peters and Miller
walked as did George, but he was
put out trying to steal second.
Stryker tripled and Caldwell
walked.
Blyth held the lead scoring four
to balance Walton’s four, taking the
16-15 victory.
Goodall singled, Ortman doubled
and Hopf and Procter homered.
Brussels U-9 team 1 is holding
its own in league play.
May 31 they met up with
hometown rivals Brussels IV.
Throughout the entire game there
was end-to-end action. Both teams
had their share of ball control.
Excellent defensive coverage by
both teams resulted in a 2-2 tie.
Scoring for Brussels I was Ben
Gowing.
June 7 Brussels was up against
Elma. Homefield advantage gave
the team a 4-0 win. Brussels
controlled much of the game.
Offensively the team executed
U-9 Ils off to a good start this season
The Brussels U-9 Ils coached by
Barb McLellan and Annette
Stephenson have started their
soccer season with a kick.
May 17 Newton 2 travelled to
Brussels. Cody Subject and Justin
Pipe shared the goaltending,
making great saves. Scott and Peter
Murray kept the ball down for
Chelsey McLellan and Subject for
a 2-0 score.
On May 24 Brussels travelled to
Listowel for a 5-0 victory. Lacy
and Kristen McArter along with
Wade Stephenson kept the ball
moving quickly.
Monday, May 31 Elma 2 came to
play with the game ending in a 1-1
tie. Subject scored for Brussels.
June 7 Brussels II played
Brussels III with a lot of fast action
on the field and saves in the net
with no goals.
Monday, June 14 Brussels I
played Brussels II. Patrick and
Kaylea Brunk along with Devan
Warwick and Kyle Bateman had
their work cut out playing defence.
It ended in a 2-1 win for team II.
June 28 Listowel 4 travelled to
play a quick action game.
U-7 Tigers
win 3-2
in Listowel
On Tuesday, June 29 at 7 p.m.
Brussels U-7 Tigers played
Listowel 2 at Eastdale Public
School.
Brussels recovered from a goalie
kick with an excellent stop by
Trevor Wood. He passed it to
Gavin Bowers who drilled the ball
to the Listowel net and scored the
first goal of the game.
There was a nice try by Brussels
goalie, Herbie Runstedler with a
great stop but it rebounded off him
after a kick from Listowel and
ended up in the net to tie the game
1-1. Runstedler played an amazing
few minutes in net and at times
held the team together.
There was a great try by Elli
Schimanski in net but the shot
rebounded off her hand to give
Listowel a 2-1 lead.
Finally after numerous trys
Andrew Lindsay scored a beautiful
goal by stealing the ball from a
Listowel player. This made the
score 2-2.
Stretton then took the ball passed
by Runstedler, all the way up the
field on a breakaway to score the
winning goal for Brussels 3-2.
Brussels U-7 Tigers’ next game
is Tuesday, July 13 against
Listowel 4 at the BMG arena field.
some good plays and defensive
coverage gave the netminders the
shutout.
Earning the goals for Brussels
were William King, two, Thomas
Cronin, and Gowing.
The next game they tackled
Brussels II June 14. Again there
was end-to-end action with several
opportunities for both teams to
score. Excellent teamwork and
passing is taking shape.
Despite the effort, however,
Brussels came up short 2-1.
Scoring the only goal was Gowing.
June 21 the squad came up
Stephenson had great control of the
ball scoring three goals. Jodi
McIntosh, Kristen McArter and
Subject also scored for a 6-0 win.

showed thSft practice does not make
perfect. This was by far the most
thrilling game of the season. End-
to-end action, zone coverage,
defensive skills, offensive
persistence and the throw in were
executed with skill.
A 1-1 tie held until a hand ball
call late in the game gave Newton
the win.
What a great effort put forth
during this game for all the
members. Scoring for the squad
was Gowing. Brussels I hit the field
Monday, July 5 against Newton II.
