Gratefully accepting the donation
The Brussels Lions Club and Brussels Optimists each received $2,750 as part of Grey
Twp.’s allocation of the Advance Funding Program of the Ontario Lottery Corporation. With
those monies, the Lions, represented by John Exel, left, presented Jane Stewart of Ethel
Minor Ball, second from left, a cheque for improvements to the park and to Vai Shortreed of
Walton Area Sports Club for the Walton park. Bruce Armstrong of the Optimists presented
donations to both women for the respective parks.

A Note from Betty
This has been a good week, lots of really nice things happening. To start,
the St. John Ambulance sponsored blood donor clinic collected 84 units of
blood. Thank you on behalf of all the folk who will benefit from your
generosity.
The Schimanski girls were doing their stuff at the Embro Games on
Canada Day - Elli danced in the seven and under class and placed fourth
and fifth in all three of her dances. Ami danced in the beginner class and did
her fling to two firsts and one second. She received the trophy for her age
group and is now in the novice class. Way to go girls!
If Clem and Phyllis Steffler appear to have a permanent grin on their faces
it’s because they have ALL their children and grandchildren in one spot.
Not since 1989 have they all been together so the celebrations have been
wonderful. From Australia, Paul, Mary, Ryan, Matthew and Alicia Cottier;
from British Columbia, Mark, Tina, Kyle and Jamie Steffler; from Alberta
Michael Steffler and friend Cindy and from Toronto Patti West. Isn’t that
great'
The board at the 5Rs is asking you to give them a call if you would like
pick-up service. Two out-of-town agencies are making frequent calls to
Brussels asking for donations. If you would like pick-up service call 887-
9072. July 21 is the possible date.
Kids Korner registrations are available now from all the churches. Be sure
to register so we can be prepared. It’s 1 - 4 p.m. Aug. 9-13.
Be sure to get your tickets to Blyth theatre. The first two plays are
excellent - totally different, but equally enjoyable. We sure are lucky to
have all that talent coming to our community.
Use these cozy days of summer to catch up on your reading.
Bye now,

Murray Cardiff attended the July
5 meeting of Brussels council to
ask their support in getting the
county to study single-tier govern

Cardiff, representing the Con

and Implementation of a single
Tier-Government in Huron, said
that while the group applauded the
municipal councils efforts regard
ing restructuring thus far, they felt
that all options should be studied
more closely.

Grey and McKillop Twps. have
discussed the possibility of taking
Brussels garbage into their landfill
site and now want some idea as to
how much that might be.
At the July 5 meeting of Brussels
council, Deputy Clerk-Treasurer
Lori Pipe said the townships had
asked for some accurate weekly
weighs of the garbage since bags
tags had been implemented in the
village. Don Carter has been con
tacted to obtain this information.

Councillor Greg Wilson agreed.
“I am a believer that if it’s past its
usefulness then it should come

Despite these views, however,

sells the taxpayers short, said
Cardiff.
“What possible justification can
there be to deny the people of
Huron the opportunity to explore
the option of a single tier govern
ment.”
After Cardiff left the meeting,
Reeve Ralph Watson asked coun
cillors for their feelings with
regards to his comments in order
that he might take them to county
council. When Councillor Mary
Stretton asked if this was opening a
whole new can of worms, Watson
responded, “It’s going to set our
schedule back. I think they’re too
late. We’ve been at this for three
years and now that we’re up to
deadline they come forward. That
is my only objection now, the tim
ing.”
Stretton also wondered what
Grey Twp., Brussels’ partner in
amalgamation talks, preferred.
Watson replied, “Their choice has
been two tier all along.’
Councillor Greg Wilson said,
