Katimavik opens youth’s eyes to new experiences
By Janice Becker
__________Citizen staff
Having heard about the
opportunity for years, Jay Sanders
of East Wawanosh Twp. decided he
too would join Katimavik for eight
months.
The youth program provides the
chance to travel across Canada
while living and working with a
diverse group of young people.
Sanders began his work
experience in St. Pacome, Quebec,
Sept. 23.
Working in several locations
such as a seniors’ home, a ski resort
and clothing store, Sanders said the
area was very French.
“I always knew they spoke
French, but didn’t know there were
places where they didn’t speak
English.”
Living in view of the St.
Lawrence was just one of many
firsts Sanders would experience
with Katimavik.
“It felt like being at the ocean
because there was seaweed and eels
and the water was salty.”
For a drastic change in scenery,
Sanders’ next stop was at
Drumheller, AB.
Situated in a prairie valley which
drops 600 feet below the
surrounding foothills, Drumheller
is known for its dinosaur beds.
Sanders spent much of his time
working at a museum.
Seeing the mountains also
brought another first. Sanders also
had the chance to go skiing.
His favourite stop along the way
was his last work period in
Kingston.
Having never lived in a city
before, Sanders said it was great to
be able to walk to the store.
It was also in Kingston where he
got to work in a field he really
enjoys. He was a puppeteer for a
school program run by the
Canadian Mental Health
Association.
As with others in the Katimavik
program, learning to live with 10
strangers was a challenge and did
cause stress at times.
“We were happier in Kingston
because we were in a bigger
house,” he said.
In some locations, five youths
shared one room.
His group fared quite well when
it came to adjusting to others’
habits. Of the 11 who started
together, only one quit.
Aside from the firsts he
experienced, Sanders said one of
the best lessons was learning to
cook, including baking bread.
“We had turns cooking so we just
followed the recipes. It usually
worked well.”
Sanders would recommend
participation in Katimavik as it
provides an opportunity to live
away from home, “which is
healthy” and to develop work
skills.
He said it gave him a chance to
see how life is different when not
in Huron County.
For those who choose to
participate, Sanders suggested
social adaptability as a criteria.
“You have to be able to make
friends.”

July 2nd, 1999
It was a day of celebration and greeting old friends when the Huron County Health Unit
marked its 50th anniversary, June 18. The first medical officer of health was on hand to tell
a few tales and staff members and nurses enjoyed the memories brought to life in the many
displays. At the conclusion of the day, current staff member Rhea Seeger unveiled a mural
created by two Central Huron Secondary School students which will hang in the facility.
