Hurricanes compete at meet

Western Region B-champs took
place recently with the Huron
Hurricanes in attendance. Western
Region includes most of Southern
Ontario south and west of Toronto,
from St. Catharines to Windsor.
This meet is a championship
meet and therefore has times that
must be met in order to qualify.
Those who qualify are in the fastest
30 per cent in the region. However,
anyone achieving five provincial
qualifying times is no longer
eligible to compete at this level.
In the 10 and under division,

Resident hosts Ohio visitors
Mr. and Mrs. Tibor Oravec and
Kristien of Akron, Ohio visited
with Mabel Wheeler on the
weekend.
Patricia Makas and Alicia spent
Sunday at the same home.
Mabel’s Moms met at their
regular time on Wednesday, June
16. Those who attended were:

Nicholas; Curtis Weber; Dustin
Pennington; Mary Jane Hobden and
Stephen; Kim Higgins, Laura,

Their topic was “Summer
Holidays”.
Muriel Coultes, Belgrave and
Velma Morningstar of Lucknow
represented the Wingham and Area
Palliative Care Association on June
11 and 12 at the first Provincial
retreat for volunteers. The retreat
was held at Trent University,
Peterborough and was sponsored
by the Glaxo Welcome Foundation.
A family luncheon was held at
the home of Brian, Alison and
breaststroke, the 100 breaststroke,
the 100 backstroke, and the 50
backstroke. He won bronze in the
50-metre butterfly, the 50-metre
freestyle, the 100-metre freestyle
and the 200-metre backstroke.
Melanie McCann placed eighth
in the 50-metre backstroke.
In the 11 and 12 age group,
Kellyann Vandendool placed
eighth in the 200 backstroke.
The Hurricanes took lots of
medals in the 13-14 division.
Aaron Datars was the leader with
seven. He won silver in the 1500-
metre freestyle, and the 400-metre

Shoot
Shoot players enjoyed many
delicious desserts prior to playing
shoot at the Belgrave Community
Centre on Friday, June 11.
Prizes were awarded to: high
lady, Shirley Carter; second high
lady, Jane Grasby; most shoots,
Helen Casemore; low lady, Marie
Merkley; high man, Alf Nichol;
second high man, Stuart Chamney;
most shoots, Ross Taylor; low man,
Harvey Edgar.
This was the last shoot party until
the fall season.

the 100-metre freestyle and sixth in

council news
East Wawanosh council at its
June 15 meeting, granted approval
to the Belgrave and District
Kinsmen for a liquor licence and
special occasion permit for the
Community Festival July 14 - 18,
or alternative rain dates.
The Ontario Coalition of Senior
Citizens Organization and Ontario
Brain Injury Association were
given permission to sell Rainbow
TV Bingo Cards in the township.
A letter is to be sent to the
Ministry of the Environment with a
copy to Wingham advising no
problems have been encountered
with the Wingham Municipal
Waste Disposal Site. Council also
supports the application for an
amendment to the “Certificate of
Approval” in order that Wingham
may continue to use the disposal
site until full capacity is reached.
James Campbell will attend a
Provincial Offences Act seminar in
Goderich, June 24. Reeve Donald
Schultz will attend the seminar -
emergency services and Y2K, June
23 in Blyth.
A court of revision was held on
the Pattison Drainage Works. There
were no appeals.
The by-law was given final
reading and tenders were opened.
The successful bidder was
Marquardt Farm Drainage Ltd.,
Palmerston in the amount of
$22,264.56 including GST.

East Wawanosh Public School, June 18, as tikes and
seniors took their turn through the obstacle course.
Bantam Girls win, lose
The Brussels Bantam Girls
hosted Holmesville and came away
with a 15-9 victory. Brussels scored
five runs in the first by Sara Little,
Chrissy Mason, Amy Douma,
Lesley Pepper and Nicole Mastnak.
Seven runs were plated in the
second. The big hit was a home run
by Jodi Semple that scored Katie
Clark and Leanne Buck ahead of

season
The Corbett boys of Brussels
ended their summer hockey season
with the Saugeen City Platers
Major Novice squad on a winning
note.
The team competed in a year-end
tournament at Teen Ranch in
Orangeville, taking the champi
onship.
Friday morning, they topped
Collingwood in a 4-3 win.
Chris Corbett tallied two with
Rhys Thomas and Grant Cochrane
adding singles.
Later that day, Corbett, Thomas,
Derek Scott and Mitchell Ferguson
each bulged the twine to earn the
Platers a 4-2 victory over the Lak
eridge Bullets.
The winning continued on Satur
day when they met the host Teen
Ranch squad.
Scoring for the Platers in the 6-1
win were Adam Corbett, C. Cor
bett, Jordan Wright, Conor Gill,
Scott and Cochrane.
The Platers shut out the Midwest
Mustangs of Listowel in the last of
the round-robin play, finishing with
the most points.
C. Corbett notched three and
Scott added one.
The Platers and Mustangs met for
the tournament final Sunday after
noon.
The Platers went undefeated,
capturing a 5-1 victory.

Kevin McArter (two) and Derek
Widmeyer.

PeeWees lose
The Hullett PeeWees took a loss
against Clinton June 16 when they
were defeated 22-7.
Though Hullett scored first, they
were unable to hold off the strong
hitters from Clinton.
Down 7-5 after two, Hullett
allowed 15 while scoring only two.
