Tigers beat Goderich U-7s get a kick out of game The Brussels Tigers continued their Huron County Fastball League season with a visit to Goderich to battle the Dukes in the first of two meetings of last season’s finalists. The Tigers opened the scoring in the first as Steve Fritz ripped an RBI triple to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Dukes quickly replied in the bottom of the frame with two unearned runs off Tigers starter and winner Doug Conley. The Tigers counted one run in the fourth on a solo homer to right centre by second baseman Ron Strome. One inning later Conley launched a long solo homer to left to cap the scoring. Conley went all the way on the slab fanning six Dukes. Next home action for the Tigers is Friday as they welcome the Goderich Orioles to town for a 7:30 p.m. start. Elma Public School was the place to be on Tuesday, June 15 at 7 p.m. when the Brussels U-7 Tigers had a great time playing the Elma 2 soccer team. Cameron Schlosser was first to be in goal with Vicki Blake and Blake Cardiff guarding. The Brussels for­ wards were Herbie Runstedler, Chris Becker and Gavin Bowers. The game started with a bang as Runstedler quickly took the ball to the opposing teams net. He barely missed getting a goal with the ball hitting the post. However, Blake took an opportunity during her shift to boot it in and came up a winner with Brussels receiving the first goal of the game. Brussels had many shots on the Elma net which often did not result in a goal due to the Elma goaltend­ ing. Brendan Stretton gave it his all and had a great kick on Elma’s net but the goalie quickly stopped it. Right after this Stretton and Elli Schimanski took control with great passes and took the ball once again down to the opposing teams end only to have it booted back to the Brussels end with Schlosser making a wonderful save. Randy Zwep showed power in the Squirt Boys off to good start The Brussels Squirt Boys got off to a good start this season, earning two wins and a tie. They were then handed three losses by Belmore (two) and Wrox- eter before they took on Gowanstown last week. Gowanstown sent just four bat­ ters to the plate in the top of the first, leaving the first scoring chance to Brussels. Cory Chapman led of with a sin­ gle and was pushed to second when Chris Corbett walked. Steven Ropp earned the RBI with a double. Mike Keffer tapped a single for an RBI before Phillip Wedow got on base and Chase Chapman pushed one across the plate with a Pre-Mites win The Brussels Pre-Mites played their second game of the season as they hosted Gowanstown. With good defensive play Brussels held the visitors to one run in the first inning. In their half of the first inning Brussels scored five runs with some good hitting by the top of their batting order. In the second inning Gowanstown scored one run while Brussels was shut out to make the score 5-2. In the third inning the visitors scored two runs to reduce the Brussels lead to one run. However, the Brussels bats came alive in their half of the inning as they scored eight runs to take a 13-4 lead. In the fourth, Brussels held the visitors scoreless while they notched another six runs to take a commanding 19-4 lead. In the final inning Gowanstown scored one run to make the final score 19-5. The Brussels attack was led by Westin McLeod, Brianne Wheeler, Brendan Stretton, Brad Quesenberry and Cassidy Peach as they all were perfect at the plate, going three for three. Some great defensive efforts were exhibited by Andrew Lindsay, Wheeler and Stretton. This victory gives Brussels a 2 and 0 record for the season. defensive position. Stretton had not given up trying to get a shot through the pipes when once again he had another shot on goal only to have it rebound on him, which resulted in no goal. Stretton gave another persevering try at Elma’s net and rejoiced in a well-deserved goal making the score 2-0 for Brussels. Blake took on the position of goalie for Brussels. Matthew Cardiff gave some powerful kicks and showed some great passing tech­ niques. Bowers and Schlosser played fantastic defense keeping the Elma team from scoring during the first half of this exciting game Andrew Lindsay, with his quick maneuvers, achieved the third goal of the game for Brussels. Elma tried valiantly to get a goal into Brussels net but were unsuccessful. They soon made up for this in the second half. Bowers took over as goalie for Brussels. Despite a great effort by Brussels Elma soon scored the first goal bringing the score to 3-1 for Brussels. Bowers did not let this sway him from making some won­ derful saves. Gowanstown tallied five to even the score after one and a half and held Brussels scoreless in the bot­ tom. The visitors took the lead for the first time as they notched three in the third, but left the bases loaded to limit the damage. Wedow took a walk before Chase Chapman laid down a perfect bunt along the third base line to advance the runners. A. Corbett singled, followed by Cory Chapman for the RBI. Chris Corbett was hit by the pitcher for the walk. Zach Horne singled but Cory Chapman was thrown out trying to get home. Hullett Mites win 19-14 Runs were the name of the game when the Hullett Mites took on Goderich Twp., June 17. While each team started with just two in their half of the first, Hullett blew it open in the top of the sec­ ond when they tallied seven. Goderich Twp. responded with two to take the score to 9-4. Zwep had a good kick on goal with Elma’s goalie putting a halt to yet another goal. However, Elma responded to this save with a goal for themselves on the Brussels net. The score was now 3-2 for Brussels. Schimanski took her position as goalie but soon after Elma scored their third goal. Stretton once again took the ball to their end scoring the fourth goal, with Robert Cronin assisting, for Brussels. Lindsay gave a powerful kick, which made the ball end up over everyone’s head getting the play turned towards the opposing net. This resulted in Zwep achieving the fifth goal for Brussels with Schlosser assisting. The play changed direction once again and ended up in the Brussels net for Elma’s fourth goal of the game. Goalie for the last part of the game was Cronin. Lindsay achieved his second goal of the game with applause from his fans. The final score was 6-4 for Brussels. The Brussels U-7 Tigers next game is Tuesday, June 9 at 7 p.m. at Eastdale Public School, Listowel against Listowel 2. Chris Ulman singled to push a run in. Keffer walked, but the bases were left loaded. Gowanstown scored five in the fourth, including a grand slam. With two out in the bottom of the inning, Cory Chapman tapped a single, C. Corbett walked and Ropp was hit by a pitch. The inning ended when Corbett was tagged out at second when Home hit a nubber. Tallying one more run, Gowanstown left two on base in the fifth. Cory Chapman earned a dou­ ble play, single-handedly. With one out, Keffer hit a single before Wedow was called out at first on a hit. Chase Chapman’s walk allowed Keffer to score on an overthrow. Chapman moved to third. The final was 14-11 for Gowanstown. score seven. Up by three runs, Hullett added five in the fourth, including a homer from Josh Nurse, and were able to hold the attacking Goderich Twp. squad to four to preserve their win. The final was 19-14. Nurse, Daniel Raidt, Nick Salverda, Lee Watkins and Antho­ ny Wilts shared time on the mound.
