Rick and Shelley Campbell pur chased the Brussels Country Inn and began running the operation last week. For Shelley, the biggest change is that she now owns the business where she has worked for six years. Having been a server at the Country Inn, Shelley will be well- known to regular patrons and hopes to add her own touches to the menu and the entertainment in the bar. Her partner and new husband, Rick, is originally from Rochester NY, where he taught orchestral music at a high school. When Rick came to Canada for a friend’s barbecue he met Shelley. After much commuting, the couple wed and he moved. Of his major career change, Rick says owning his own business been in the back of his mind. When the opportunity to buy the Inn arose, they both thought it was “most appealing’’. Shelley says she will concentrate on serving the customers and orga nizing events. Rick’s strengths are in the financial end and the “grunt work”, he laughs. As they get more accustomed to the business, Rick hopes to get into tending bar and maybe some cook ing. Though not yet tying on an apron, Rick and Shelley have added some new items to the menu such as honey sesame pork tenderloin, Chicken-in-the-Inn, lasagna, penne, and a spinach chicken salad served with honey dijon mustard. Of interest to the lunch crowd will be the $3.99 meals. Changes will be coming to the entertainment side of the establish ment as the Campbells plan to bring in more bands, particularly tribute bands and hold many chari ty events. They are also considering a casino night and a magician’s act. For family fun, they are planning entertainment for the children on Saturday afternoons. Their overall idea for the Inn is to make it a place which is fun to be and a good place to eat. “We want the Brussels Country Inn to be the happening place so people don’t have to drive so far,” says Shelley. Expanding on the current dining room business and available suites upstairs, Shelley says they will cater small weddings and hope to create weekend getaway packages. Lovers Weekends with champagne in the room. Much of the previous staff will remain at the Inn, making the tran sition to new owners easier. “The staff is fantastic. They have taught us a lot,” says Rick. Rick and Shelley are also looking forward to getting to know their new community as they have now moved to the Inn from Wingham. As a new resident of the country, Rick says he likes the area and the people have all been very nice. “Canadian people are very easy to deal with. They are more laid back and things are not so hectic.” If just 1% more Canadians were physically active, annual savings in health-care costs could be as much as $12,000,000.
