Seniors get garden grant THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16, 1999. PAGE 15. From the Minister’s Study Minister has words for you The Seniors’ Secretariat, Ministry of Health have announced that “Earth Friendly Gardens” have received a grant of $2,500 to celebrate the International Year of the Older Person. “A new logo will soon be added to our workbook” said the project co-ordinator, Lynda Rotteau. As organizations become partners and contribute to the project, their logos are placed on the front cover of the workbook. The money will be used to recruit, train and assist seniors and retired persons who volunteer to go into the schools with lesson plans and ideas to share with the students. The goal of Earth Friendly Gardens is to create an organic vegetable garden in each elementary school in Huron and Perth County by the spring of 2001. Lori Stanley of Children’s Aid of Huron, the projects lead agency, says, “These gardens are not possible without the assistance of volunteers who attend the schools on a weekly basis from January to June”. During the 1998/99 school year 20 gardens have been created with another 47 planned over the next two years. The volunteers participate in training sessions and co-ordinate activities with participating children, their families and teachers. When the gardens are planted the volunteers work alongside the children to grow the vegetables. Rotteau is very pleased that another partner has been added to the list to ensure that all children in the area have the chance to learn how to grow food and the importance of vegetables in a healthy diet. The gardens are cared for in the summer months by volunteer families, who take on one week each, to water and weed the gardens. While most vegetables planted are geared to a fall harvest, any ripe produce is offered to the helpers as a reward for their participation. In the fall the Huron County Food advisors attend the schools to instruct the students in processing and preserving methods to extend the harvest. Last year the participating pilot schools consumed their produce by making vegetable soup for the whole school, served watermelon at lunch and took home tomatoes for the families supper. “We look forward to a bumper crop again this year,” said Rotteau. Everyone Welcome For more information call 887-6665 Rev. Cathrine Campbell Melville Presbyterian, Brussels Knox, Belgrave I love words, I love what can be done with them and one of the joys of being able to access the internet is that I have more places to look to find new meanings and new uses of and for words. Words have such power they can literally break a heart. Or they have such softness they can make the grouchiest person alive break into a smile in spite of him or herself. Words can be varied in their meaning or at least what we hear. Think about would/wood for instance. A love of words alone however, does not necessarily mean clean communication. You could have the most amazing vocabulary, a gift for turning a phrase and a desire to make your information known, but if no one will listen or pay attention you might as well be humming the alphabet for all anyone knows or cares. However, let a problem arise, or an opportunity be missed and often the first response is "Why didn’t anyone tell me?" It usually does not have a soothing effect to say, "I did - but you would not listen”. The words were offered but they were not received. It is often the same with scripture - THE WORD - the contents of your Bible have been amassed over a long period of time by people who lived, loved and experienced all of the emotion we have today. Granted their tools of communication have been a sharp stick or a quill pen but the underlying human condition is still the same. This makes the Bible one of the most relevant and yet, sadly, the least read books of today. Many homes possess such a document but it often has more dust than fingerprints on it. This is a shame for so much richness to be neglected. Give Someone a Second Chance. Please give generously. At our Bible study we have come across humour, sadness, fear, joy, reverence, love, concern an-d consolation all expressed eloquently and with a clarity that touches the heart and the ear today. To hear the words of Jesus as he is on the cross is to understand that forgiveness is possible even in the most unlikely of places. To hear the account of Naaman is to know that God's healing touch is not restricted by race, rank or place of birth. To hear of Ruth and Naomi is to hear of faith, fidelity and love that goes beyond the expected and has the most wonderful results. These are but a few examples of what richness there is in your Bible. The communicates itself from every page is the most profound and the most apt that you will ever find and it is there for you alone - you don't need a degree in interpretation you guidance that are Welcome at the BLYTH COMMUNITY CHURCH OF GOD 9:45 a.m. - Sunday School for Children and Adults 11:00 a.m. - Morning Worship Bible Studies - Wednesday 10 a.m. & 7:30 p.m. Phone 523-4590 McConnell St., Blyth Blyth United Church Come Worship The Lord With Us Sundays - 11:00 a.m. Worship Service Minister ~ Rev.
