The Citizen, 1999-06-16, Page 3Kathy’s Korner By Kathy Bromley On Friday, June 4 at the Bly th Anglican Church attendance was up as 41 people were out for the mpnthly meal program put on by the Town and Country Homemakers. The mouth-watering lunch was made up of marinated chicken breasts, new potatoes, garden green peas, layered cucumber salad topped off with apple or raisin pie and ice cream. Birthday recognition for the month of June went out to Dorothy Daer, June Peck and Yera Badley, while Happy Anniversary was sung to Leah Davis, our Town and Country Co-ordinator, who is now married for one year. Compliments of Jean Plaetzer, the door prize of irises to be planted was won by Kathy Bromley. The guest speaker for the afternoon was Marguerite Thomas who is a public health nurse. She spoke on a very important issue today: “Sun Safety”. It was stated on the radio just last week that statistics have proven public awareness concerning skin cancer has obviously been very effective. The number of people who have been diagnosed with skin cancer is down in comparison to 10 years ago. People now know it is a proven fact that it is' best to try and stay out of direct sunlight between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p in. whenever possible. If you have no way around working out in the sun, wear the proper strength of sunscreen, applied half an hour before going out, and wear a hat. There are still myths that are out concerning the sun: • You can not get a sunburn on a cloudy day. False - thanks to the ultra violet wav£s, you can. • Shade prevents burning. Again, not necessarily. • You can not get a bum after you have been swimming. You most certainly can, as water attracts the sun. • Babies under the age of one year should be kept out of the sun and not have sunscreen applied to their delicate skin. True. Cancer Care In Ontario is now getting established in Huron County. Word of advice for cancer prevention is to know your body and to report any sudden changes that could end up being fatal if left undetected. Leah Davis thanked Marguerite Thomas for the helpful presentation and also thanked her for donating back the money she had won in our monthly 50/50 draw. The next monthly meal is planned for Friday, July 2, with Const. Don Shropshall speaking on “travelling alone”. Everyone is welcome to attend. Kathy’s Quote of the Week: Naked and nude mean the same thing except that naked sounds like a surprise, while nude suggests that it was done on purpose. PUC, council settle contentious issue Club hosts bike rodeo The Optimist Club of Blyth and District held a bike rodeo on June 8 at the Blyth arena. Blyth Public School students from kindergarten to Grade 8 participated in the program. The rodeo consisted of a bike safety quiz and bike, rollerblade and helmet inspection before students maneuvered through a series of activities designed to test their skill and knowledge of the rules of the road. The 96 students who completed the program received an information package from the OPP Const. Don Shropshall, community safety officer, and Cadet Tanya Banter co-ordinated the program with the Optimist Club, Blyth Public School and the Huron County Health Unit. Parents are encouraged to review the bike safety checklist. Several bikes needed reflectors, horns and brakes. Cracked helmets must be replaced. The three approved helmets are CSA, ANSI and SNELL. Rollerbladers are required to wear helmets and Const. Shropshall recommends knee and elbow protection. The Optimists, Blyth Public School, Blyth arena and volunteers Gail, Nicole, Joanne,. Rachel, Glenda, Sandi, Sherri, Kim and Laurie helped make this program a success. Our mistake! By Janice Becker Citizen staff While the issue was a contentious one, Blyth PUC settled it with a simple response. They would handle it. After Blyth councillors sent a let ter to the PUC, advising them of council’s concern regarding the collection of overdue bills, Reeve Mason Bailey was asked to explain council’s input. Acting as council’s representa tive on the commission, Bailey said the matter had come before council because an account in arrears had appeared in the minutes of the pre vious PUC minutes which is included in council’s meeting pack age. PUC Commissioner Tom Cronin A Blyth Lion was misidentified in a picture in the June 9 issue of The Citizen. Eileen Jefferson took part in the presentation to the Law Enforce ment Torch Run along with Bev Blair. We apologize for the error. said one account was overdue and that a councillor had suggested to Cronin that the business be shut down. • However, Cronin said the PUC was handling the matter and col lecting a small portion of the bill at a time. “If we shut them off, we wouldn’t get a penny.” PUC member Dale Whitfield said the PUC had not written off any arrears in two years and believed they were doing a good job talking with clients and collect ing arrears. “Anyone can write about a con cern,” said Whitfield. “Does coun cil have a legitimate belief they can Stuck with a spare tire around the middle? Future^., _ --------------- -----------=_____paRTKipaciujn tell us how to do things?” Cronin added that Blyth Clerk- Treasurer John Stewart had informed him that council has no jurisdiction of PUC. “We don’t tell council how to collect tax arrears,” he said. Bailey said he was relaying coun cil’s concerns. “That is noted and filed,” said Whitfield. “We don’t act like the city. We know these people and we talk to them.” Bailey noted there were some personal animosities entering the issue which should not be. When asked if Bailey would take PUC’s answer back to council, he stated that it would be recorded in the minutes and he would prefer not raise the matter again.
