William Street work saves village money
The preparation work for
William Street in Brussels will save
the village some money.
At the June 7 meeting of council
it was noted that the preparation
work is going to be considerably
less as only a couple of spots had to
be dug out, rather than the whole
road. The estimated savings, said
Councillor Mike Thomas, should
be about $6,400.
Excavation, he said, might only
cost about $1,000.

A school crossing sign will be

A letter was received from Mor
ris Twp. regarding the termination
of the current agreement with Brus
sels for the landfill site, effective
March I, 2000.
Brussels council had asked for
clarification in writing at an earlier
meeting.
Morris said they had been
advised by the municipality’s solic
itor that the agreement must be ter
minated before amalgamation or
Morris may be bound to accept
Grey Twp.'s waste as well.
Clerk-Treasurer Donna White
said, “I don't understand that real
ly. because Grey has their own
site.”
White has sent a letter to the
Grey/McKillop landfill committee
to see if Brussels will be able to use
their site. The meeting is June 26.

The Brussels Legion breakfast
for June 20 is cancelled. Come out
and enjoy the Firemen’s Breakfast
instead.
There were seven tables of
euchre at play this past Saturday.
The cards were kind to Jim Coultes
and Glenn Sellers as they were the
first place winners with 77 points.
June Jacklin and her partner took
second with 68 points and close on
their heels were Harvey Edgar and
Ed Stewart with 66 points.
The lucky Lloyd Appleby won
for men’s lone hands and Jean
Little won for the ladies.
Fresh strawberries were given
away for extra door prizes.
Euchre will be held only once a
month for the summer. Watch for
the dates in the coming events ad
for the Brussels Legion.
A lot of Brussels and area people
are participating in the Legion
sponsored slo-pitch tournament this
weekend. Come out to the ball
diamonds and see some fun ball
being played on Friday night and
Saturday. Remember it’s Father’s
Day on Sunday. Surprise Dad with
something special!

A Note from Betty
Well did you get enough to eat over the weekend? It’s your own fault if
you didn’t.
The Lions Club party and the United Church Women were both groups
dishing out their best fare for your eating enjoyment and to make it even
better, both groups turn around and use the profits to help others. Now do
you feel better for eating so much?
On the subject of eating, it is rumoured that in a town nearby a concoction
known as “MUDSLIDE” is causing normally sensible folk from our area to
miss meals, make special trips and talk endlessly of the ingredients of this
ice cream treat. I think cholesterol levels will soon be mandatory for at least
two people.
Don’t you wish you were in Grade 8 again? If you were in Grey, you'd
just be back from a memory making trip to Quebec City with all its history
and beauty and if you were from Brussels you’d be in the middle of Ottawa
right now checking out the Museum of Science and Technology, Parliament
Hill and the many wonders of our capital. Both these trips are a great
introduction to life beyond Huron. Enjoy!
, Father’s Day is Sunday, a time to appreciate the heredity you have been
given and a time to go see Dad and tell him thanks.
Bye now,
Betty G.

A mix-up six years ago, is caus
ing some problems for a Brussels
property owner.
The “Ark” building, owned by
George McWhirter was originally
zone R1 -1; which allowed for a
carpentry shop, but no retail sales.
McWhirter said that The Ark did
not have his permission to change
the zoning to the Rl-3 designation
in 1993, that it needed to obtain a
permit for a drop-in centre.
White said that council waived
the fee in support for the centre and
no application or fee was paid.
She said McWhirter feels that he
told Sallianne Patch she could do
what was needed to get the centre
running, but added that he had no
idea it would mean a re-zoning.

White suggested to council that
they cover the cost of about $500 to
have it changed back so that
McWhirter could sell the property.
“It is no good to him as it is,” she
said.
Upset because they had no proof
that McWhirter was not aware of
the change, Councillors Joe Seili
