Entertainment I Buskers can play in Blyth Three special preview performances at The Blyth Festival are designated PWYC - Pay What You Can. These evening performances are for That Summer on Wednesday, June 23, Big Box on Tuesday, June 29 and Every Dream on Aug. 3. First time theatre-goers who would like to sample the theatre experience at the Blyth Festival can decide for themselves how much they’ll pay for their tickets. There’s always excitement in the air at a PWYC performance since this is the first time the production will be presented before an audience. There’s also a chance for mishaps but that’s all part of the adventure as the audience takes the role of ‘test market’ group for the productions. PWYC performances are traditional in many theatres across Canada, but last year was the first time they were offered at the Festival. By the third one, the excitement of trying out a new play caught on and there were line-ups s Medic Alert SPEAKS FDR YOU 1-8DD-668-15D7 www.medicalert.ca /iacJz & for (Shelley) Michelle Merner & Kelly Carter Friday, June 18, 1999 at the Blyth Arena 9-1 a.m. Sponsored by Mo I son's Age of Majority only $6.00 per person Music by DJ Lunch Provided at the box office. From June 26 - Sept. 12 the festival is offering interested buskers a place to play before the evening and matinee performances at Blyth Memorial Hall. The theatre has a long history of including Blyth and area residents in its activities and this year’s busker event creates more opportunity than ever for local performers. The Blyth Festival’s courtyard area in front of the box office offers musicians, magicians, mimes, jugglers or puppeteers a comfortable space to perform with a potential audience of nearly 500 people per show. In the event of inclement weather, there is an alternate space, in the Hall’s downstairs cafe. The Festival plans for the buskering to begin on July l in conjunction with another special event: the annual Tourism Night reception and performance. After Guelph hall gets new seats River Run Centre, Guelph, announced May 26 that the installation of the new, soft retractable seats in the Co-operators Hall is complete. Designed to create an intimate and flexible performance space, the 225-seat telescopic unit will allow River Run’s technical crew to change the hall from a flat-floor space to a theatre-style configuration quickly and efficiently - literally with just the push of a button. There are three wheelchair seat locations in addition to the 225 seats. The cost of'the new seating at $150,000 was shared equally by the City of Guelph and The Co operators. Eric Coates, artistic associate at the theatre sees this as a great opportunity to introduce Blyth’s audience to a whole new group of entertainers. “Each time someone comes to see a new play, they’ll get to see a new busker as well. And the buskers get a chance to play for a captive audience every night - everyone wins.” Since the festival hopes to showcase a variety of informal entertainment the buskers are asked to attend a screening session prior to the season. Selections will be based on the performer’s enthusiasm as well as content of the act. Interested performers should call the Blyth Festival administration office to arrange an appointment.
