Helping to build
Brussels Mennonite Fellowship hosted a Laotian dinner,
on Sunday, which was prepared by the members of
Grace Laotian Mennonite Church in St. Jacobs to raise
money for their building fund. Workers braved the heat
and stayed in the kitchen to feed the many hungry diners

‘Making Me Over’ Duff’s sermon
-•Viola Traviss and Mary
Humphries greeted worshippers at
Duff s United Church on June 6.
The service began with the
Sunday School promotion. Patty
Banks handed out participation in
the Whole People of God
certificates and Secretary Dianne
VanVIiet handed out the Sunday
School attendance seals. Geoffrey
Banks and Jennifer McClure had
the highest seals of 11 years.
Gloria Wilbee, Shannon Gibbons
and Brad Finlayson, the other
teachers, were thanked as well.
Many thanks to Heidi McClure
who was the treasurer for the year.
The children then went outside
for games and hot dogs.
Rev. James Murray announced
that a shower for Donna Godkin
will take place June 1 1 at the
church at 8 p.m. Also that next
Sunday is Anniversary Sunday
with guest speakers Oz Amal and
Bonnie Cole-Arnal. The service
starts at 11 a.m. and lunch will be
served after the service. There will
be special music by Kendall,
Denise and Carman Carnochan
sisters.
Rev. Murray’s sermon was
called, Make Me Over. People are
made over by makeup experts or
hair stylists. B-ut no matter how
wonderful they look and have been
transformed they are still the same
person inside.
“When we do seek out the new it
is important that we don’t forget
the past, the old. If we abandon the

Out of the 11 Walton students
that went on to the track and field
meet in Seaforth where seven
schools competed, Jamie Reinink

100-metre.
Chris Holmes won sixth in the
ball throw, sixth in the 200-metre

old, we will forget who we are and
where we’ve been,” said Rev.
Murray.
In the readings Abraham was
called to make-over his life and
start anew in the promised land.” It
is only when we integrate the old
with the new, that we become a
complete person. It is only when
we make peace with our past, and
include it in our present, that we
can be fully open to all that the
future has to offer us, and make the
make-over into a real and lasting
change for the better.”
Abraham was made over from a
foreigner and a stranger, into being
the founder of a new people, and a
new way of faith. Matthew was
made over from being a worldly tax
collector, to being a disciple, one
who build’s God’s holy realm on
earth. “We can be made over,” said
Rev. Murray. “We do this by
maintaining the old, and integrating
it with the new. By trusting in the
power of the Holy Spirit, we can
become all we want to be.”

On Sunday, May 30, Brussels
Mennonite Fellowship was bursting
for more space as many relatives
and friends came to witness the
baby dedication of Megan
Catharine Siemon, bom on Dec. 11,
1998. Her parents Paul and Barbara
plus her brother Michael and sister
Melissa participated in a ceremony
performed by Pastor Ben Wiebe.
Little Megan was attentive and
curious but not disturbed when
Pastor Wiebe took her in his arms
and blessed her.
Ashley Keffer, a special friend of
the family, sang a lovely song.
Pastor Wiebe spoke about this
life in anticipation of eternal life.
Good weather,
bargains
at yard sales
It was garage sale weekend in
town this past Saturday with sales
being down somewhat this year.
But the weather was beautiful and
those who came out got some
pretty good bargains.
Leona and Karen McDonald and
Maxine Marks travelled to Calgary.
Maxine stayed with her son. Neil
McDonald from Vancouver arrived
Thursday night.
Friday they travelled to
Lethbridge for the graduation
ceremonies of Michael Warwick. A
dinner was held Friday evening and
a barbecue after the ceremonies on
Saturday.
They travelled back to Calgary
on Sunday where Karen stayed
with her daughter Kendra. They
then went back to Olds where she
lived 15 years.
Maxine and Leona went by bus
to Saskatchewan to visit friends.
Some of them have just finished
seeding and some will never get
their crop in. There is lots of rain
and water everywhere.
The group arrived back home on
the weekend.
“Sometimes we live as if this life
was the all important thing,” he
said. But Jesus in Mark 8 talks
about losing one’s life in order to
gain one’s life.
II Cor. 4: 16-18 encourages
people to look beyond the present
things that they treasure, and live
for those things that have eternal
value.
Rev. 21: 1-5 speaks of the eternal
joy to be experienced dwelling with
God.
This special time thinking about
the precious life of little Megan
was an appropriate time to reflect
on both birth and imminent death.
This life is only a small part of the
