The Citizen, 1999-06-09, Page 11Hurricanes in the swim at meets T: The Novice and Age Group divisions of the Huron Hurricanes attended Novice Fest at the University of Guelph. Novice Fest is a championship meet for beginning competitive swimmers. Those in attendance were: Holly Wilder. Jessica Sparling, Lisa McCann, Melanie McCann, Robyn Lobby, Patrick Livingston, Jeremy Blackwell, Jacob Crosby, Elizabeth MacGregor and Aiden Barnett. In the eight and under division, L. McCann placed fourth in the 25- metre freestyle, fifth in the 25- metre breaststroke, and the 50- breaststroke and sixth in the 25- metre butterfly and the 25-metre breaststroke. Her time in the 50- metre breaststroke set a new team record for her age group. Sparling placed seventh in the 25-metre butterfly. In the nine and 10-year-old age group, M. McCann won gold in the 100-metre butterfly, and silver in the 50-metre freestyle. She placed fourth in both the 50-metre breaststroke and the 25-metre butterfly, and sixth in the 100- metre individual medley. Barnett won bronze in the 50- metre backstroke. Lobb won bronze in the 50-metre breaststroke. He placed seventh in the 50-metre freestyle, and the 100- metre breaststroke. Livingston place fourth in the 50- metre breaststroke, fifth in the 100- Squirts lose in Belmore The Blyth Squirt Boys took to the diamond in Belmore, June 3, only to be outhit by the home team. After a three up and three down inning in the first, Mitch Ortman popped a single in the second only to be left on base. Down 7-0, the squad got going in the third when Trevor Hopf hit a single and Eric Caldwell walked. A double by Darcey Cook and a Bantams come from behind The Brussels Bantam Girls travelled to Listowel Tuesday night and came away with a come-from- behind 14-12 victory. Brussels entered the final inning trailing by seven runs, but rallied to win the game. Every Brussels player in the game made it to base safely. Flowers at the front of the church were in memory of Jean Alexander, News June Fothergill received word of the passing of her cousin, Winnifred Crapper of Knollcrest Lodge, Milverton. Vandendool placed fourth in the 200-metre freestyle, and eighth in both the 100-metre freestyle and the 200-metre individual medley. K. Vandendool placed sixth in the 100-metre backstroke. Lee placed fifth in the 100-metre backstroke. In the 13 and 14-year-old age group Datars placed seventh in the 100-metre freestyle. McNichol won bronze in the 50- metre freestyle, and silver in the 100-metre breaststroke. He placed fourth in the 200-individual medley, and sixth in the 100-metre backstroke. B. Segeren won bronze in the 100-metre breaststroke and the 100-metre backstroke. She placed sixth in the 50-metre freestyle. A. Segeren placed fourth in the walk to Kyle Procter scored three runs for Blyth. Another quick inning in the fourth left the team farther behind. A Hopf single and a Caldwell walk eventually resulted in another plater. Blyth lost 19-4. Cook and Josh Albrechtas pitched for Blyth. Lowe shared the pitching. On Thursday the girls travelled to Ethel, and came away with a 25-14 win. All Brussels girls scored at least two runs, with Shannon White, Katie Clark and Jodi Semple scoring three a piece. Lowe went the distance on the mound for Brussels. * sister of Willis and Marie Bromley. This was Sunday School Award Sunday. The junior choir sang three selections. Lunch was served after the service. In the 15 and over age group Datema won silver in the 200- metre individual medley and bronze in the 100-metre backstroke. Swimming season is rapidly coming to an end for most swimmers. However, for those who have achieved provincial qualifying times and/or Junior National times the season is a bit longer. Registration day for the 1999/2000 swim season will be Aug. 14 at the Vanastra Recreation Centre. Mites win 19-10 The Belgrave Mites hosted Gowanstown on June 3 and defeat­ ed their visitors 19-10. Melissa Cowan had a solid hit getting three RBIs. There was a great effort defensively as well by Josh VanCamp and Anna Nichol­ son in the infield and outfielders Meagan Carter, Amber Delisle, J.D. Shiell and Scott Pletch. Carter Cloakey and Shawn Cook shared the duties behind the plate, while Adam Malhiot and Ryan North took turns in right field. Corey Swanson held tight at third base. Pitching duties were shared by Brandon Kellington, who struck out three and Trevor McArter with two strikeouts. Riding along Kendra Carter of Blyth joined in with the Law Enforcement Torch Run when they made their way across North Huron, June 3. They stopped by Blyth Public School for a mini run and presentation. Hullett PeeWee Girls slam way to victory A strong Hullett Twp. PeeWee- Girls squad took to the field in Benmiller, June 2, against Col- borne Twp. Hullett struck early for a sizeable lead and never let go. After seven runs in the first from the visitors, Colborne pushed in three then held Hullett to one in the second. Colborne drew to within three in the bottom of the inning when they scored two to bring the total to 8-5. Hullett added two in the third and a game-winning eight in the fourth for the 18-10 victory. Dawn Dolmage pitched through the third with five strikeouts and Kelly Ann Vandendool closed out the game. Emily Wilkinson hit Hullett’s lone homer.
