ine Ontario Physical and Health
Education Association (OPHEA) -
with the support of the Government
of Ontario - has launched a
sweeping new province-wide
initiative called Active Schools to
combat dangerous levels of
physical inactivity in students from
JK to Grade 12.
The unique initiative has been
developed to create more
opportunities for students to be
active by involving school
communities as equal partners in
the creation and/or delivery of
school-based physical activity
programs.
"Physical inactivity among
Ontario students has reached
epidemic levels, worsened by an
era of budget and program cuts to
education," cautions Dr. Andrew
Pipe, MD, associate professor,
Ottawa Heart Institute and
spokesperson for the Active
Schools initiative.
Active Schools' novel approach
begins with the conviction that
getting students active is more than
a school issue. Instead, Active
Schools advocates the co-operation
of schools, parents, public health
professionals, community
recreation groups and business
partners to provide students with
more frequent opportunities to
benefit from school-based physical
activity.
The Active Schools initiative will
help Ontario's school communities
adopt, implement and maintain
school-based physical activity
programs. Teachers will be
provided with professional
development opportunities to help
implement Ontario's new Health
and Physical Education (HPE)
curriculum. Teachers will also have
access to a newly-developed central
inventory of quality programs and
resources.
Active Schools will also
implement a campaign to increase
awareness among school
communities of the issues and need
for school-based physical activity,
and will ensure that opportunities
offered through the school
curriculum are supplemented with
an adequate range of co-curricular
activities including intramurals,
school sport, and activity-based
clubs.
Finally, Active Schools will help
co-ordinate the implementation of
existing physical activity programs.
