Stratford showcases
designer home for 999
E ntertainment
A group of interior designers and
decorators have again joined
together to create Stratford
Designer Showcase Home '99, a
major fundraising project to
support the work of The Lung
Association, Huron-Perth. The
Showcase Home, located at 45
James St., Stratford, will be open
May 29 through June 13 from
12:20 to 7:30 g.m. daily, with the
exception of Sunday, May 30 when
the home will be open for public
viewing from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The beautiful Italianate house,
built in 1873, features a marble
foyer and five fireplaces and is
situated on four acres of treed
property overlooking Lake
Victoria. The main floor features
elegant principal rooms including a
living room, dining room, library
and home office. Rooms open to
the public on the second floor
include six bedrooms, some
featuring marble fireplaces and
ensuite baths, a spacious hall and
welcoming sitting area.
As well, the large verandah has
been wonderfully furnished with
iron furniture and bountiful planters
and the grounds have been
accented with an array of creative
vignettes.
Stratfordites have long been
fascinated by the house known
locally as the “Douglas Estate”. It
was built by John Idington, for
whom the small creek which runs
through the property is named, in
1873 on a 50-acre parcel of land.
Idington was a lawyer, a Queen’s
Counsel at age 36, and went on to
become a Justice on the Supreme

Court of Canada. He and his wife

Idington is buried in Avondale
Cemetery.
The house has always been a
private home except for the period
from 1909 to 1929 when it was
operated by the Hislop sisters as the
Ancrum Brae Private Hospital, a
sanatorium whose advertisements
claimed it was “particularly
adapted to restore health to
impaired nerves and tired brains
and bodies.” It was during this time
that a fire damaged the original
tower so severely that it and much
of the third floor had to be
removed.
A number of changes have been
made to the house by the four
families who have lived there since
it reverted to a private residence -
bathrooms were added or
modernized, a work room and
garage were added, a new verandah
was built, and the property has
been reduced to four acres.
The beautifully decorated house
with its park-like setting remains
one of Stratford’s true gems.
Tickets to Stratford Designer
Showcase Home ’99 are $12, $10
for seniors, and are available at the
door.

education programs and medical
research commitments of The Lung
