The RYCs will be working regionally to improve communications, increase awareness and effectiveness of these three programs. Murray Needham, a native of Bruce County, has been chosen to represent Grey, Bruce, Huron and Perth Counties. The 4-H program in Ontario has continuing success in fostering the personal development of youth. Clubs, leadership camps, exchange opportunities and workshops help members to develop leadership skills, confidence building and goal setting. Needham will provide a role with 4-H geared towards capacity building and help to create strategic alliances with other organizations. The Junior Farmer Association of Ontario has been creating rural leaders in Ontario through self help and community betterment since 1944. The J.F. program is for youth between the ages of 15 to 29. It provides youth an opportunity for networking to learn leadership skills, be part of national and international exchanges and helps youth improve the community in which they live, the RYC will help enhance this organization by being another voice in the community to increase awareness. Gould was an atypical who gave up public performances early in his career in order to devote his creative genius to recordings, radio and television programs and selected print media. During 23 years of recording sessions Gould was frequently confronted by the camera of Don Hunstein, a New York photographer for Columbia "We are glad to have Murray on board. He was chosen due to his extensive experience with agricultural organizations in the four counties he will be covering” said Lucy Duke, manager of the Ontario 4-H program which will be administering the RYC positions. "Murray will be kept busy covering a territory extending from Tobermory to Kirkton. The next year will prove interesting for him as the three organizations go through this one-year pilot project to help enhance and improve their position in the community," she adds. Needham has had 19 years combined experience in both 4-H and Junior Farmers programs. He has also been involved in many ways promoting youth employment programs in rural areas. "Junior Farmers and 4-H in my opinion are great opportunities for youth and can never be promoted enough. When these organizations are included with the newly formed Rural Youth Employment Network it will be a great service to youth in Grey, Bruce, Huron and Perth Counties," said Needham. This project has received funding from Human Resources Develop ment Canada and is the only one of its kind in the country. It is expected to have great results. A remarkable relationship developed between the two men as Gould came to realize that he could express himself not only at the keyboard but also in front of the lens. The Hunstein Variations: A Photographic Record of Glenn Gould 1957 - 1980 is the synthesis of this period of portraiture and personal association. The collection of 28 photographs reveals the musician’s passions and personality like a map of his life. Gould’s youthful lean figure changes with age, but his eyes remain sly and saintly and the outline of the awkward hunch with which he approached the piano stays constant. The Hunstein Variations derives its name from the title of The Goldberg Variations, that composition by Johann Sebastian Bach with which Gould is so famously associated. The exhibition was organized in 1992 by Canada’s Glenn Gould Foundation to mark the pianist’s 60th birthday year.
