A Note from Betty 4-H Club meets at Mitchells
The flower beds of Brussels are certainly worth a walk - a few late tulips,
many colours of iris, spirea. lupins and lots of other pretties. My new orange
wall flower has given many moments of appreciation.
I hope many of you contacted Donna or Bev about the stump sculptures.
That would make those walks even more pleasant and show the world our
creativity.
A reminder that the 5R’s is a not-for-profit business that tries to be
charitable and profitable. Please send your good items there, instead of
allowing a truck from the city to have your treasures. The board asks
everyone to think long term when they support and shop at out-of-town
enterprises.
London Conference United Church Annual Meeting, the 75th, was held in
Ridgetown last week with Beginnings and Endings as the theme. Several
folk from the area attended and came away knowing the reality of
Christianity in today’s world. The world of our childhood is gone and in its
place is an exciting, fast-paced chaotic sphere. Bible study, business
worship and speakers reminded us of the many beginnings and endings in
our lives and that out of the chaos and untidiness of change our beautiful
world remains!
Bye now,

The first meeting of Brussels l
4-H “Let's Landscape” Club was
held at Julia Mitchell’s.
Following the election of
officers, members reviewed events
for the upcoming garage sale and
read about fleshy/woody plants and
annual, biennial and perennial
planting.
The remainder of the meeting
was spent outside. All members
participated in cleaning up an old
perennial bed, planting daffodils,
lilies, trimming old plants, putting
in a bird bath and wood bark
groundcovers.
Then Christina trimmed a large
euonymus shrub in another bed
with members giving ideas on how
to improve the shrub bed of mungo
pine and euonymus plants.
The second meeting was at Emily
Cardiff s home.
Members took turns reading
about designs of shrubs, trees,
groundcovers and planting on a
given scene.
Junior members were given
landscape pictures to work on and
seniors are doing their own.
They all worked outside
trimming euonymus, yews, and
small pine bushes.
Perennials were dug up and
members continued the meeting
over at Rachel Garland’s, where
they worked in a raised annual
flowerbed planting marigolds,
petunias, riviera and begonias.

Kurtis McNichol was a lucky young man when he and mom Kathy found the perfect item at
the Brussels yard sale, Saturday. The hot, sunny skies brought hordes of people into the

At the Branch
Legion shows appreciation
By JoAnn McDonald
We’ve come to the end of
another month of activities at the
Brussels Legion Branch.
An enjoyable evening was had by
all, when Brussels hosted the
Seaforth Branch for a joint
installation service of the new
executives.
Euchre was held on Saturday,
May 22 and only seven tables were
in play. The first place winners
were Carman and Ila with 75
points. The second and third place
winners, tied with 70 points and
split the prizes. They were Neil and
Edna and Helen and Mabel. Lone
hands prize for the ladies went to
Delores.
An appreciation evening was
held on May 28 for the Brussels
Legion Ladies Auxiliary, as it
celebrated its 53rd anniversary.
There were 13 auxiliary members
present to enjoy a potluck dinner,
then games and entertainment. The
Branch executive acknowledged
their contributions and thanked
them for the efforts.
Don’t forget the new executive is
now in place and beginning a new
year. Continued support is
appreciated and all members are
urged to come out to the general
meetings held the fourth Monday
of the month. New faces, new ideas
a new year.
