The Citizen, 1999-05-26, Page 9Sports 46 Madill athletes earn spot at WOSSA F.E. Madill Secondary School students had an exceptional day at the Huron-Perth track meet in Goderich, May 11-12. With five athletes taking individ­ ual titles, 46 participants from Madill advanced to the WOSSA held last week in London. The Midget Girls 4x100 metre relay teams captured first and sec­ ond. The team of Amanda Palmer of East Wawanosh and Sonja Spal- ing, Tracey MacDonald and Aman­ da Drennan crossed the finish line in a record time of 52.40 seconds. Laura Meier of East Wawanosh, Sheena Baker, Sara Drennan and Rebecca Bruton followed with a time of 55.70 sec. In the Junior Girls division, Jodi Semple of Grey Twp. placed third in the shot put with a toss of 7.8 metres and fifth in discus with a throw of 18.21 metres. As a member of the Junior Girls 4x100 metre relay team, Semple, Alicia Riley, Audrae Dickson and Leanne Fear took second in a time of 55.9 seconds. Meier earned third in long jump, 4.36 metres; third in the 200-metre, 28.20 seconds and fifth in the 400- metre in 1:10.03 minutes. Mandy Sellers of Morris Twp. placed fourth in the 200-metre with a time of 29.20 and eighth in the 100-metre in 13.8 seconds. Blyth girl wins at WOSSA Jamie Lewis, a Blyth resident and Central Huron Secondary School student, was among many from North Huron who captured medals at the WOSSA track and field meet in London last week. Lewis earned a first in the Midget Girls triple jump and sixth in the 100-metre. Other CHSS winners were: Kate Johnston, first in Midget Girls dis­ cus and second in shot put; Matt McKee, fourth in Senior Boys high jump and Naomi Amoraal, sixth in Midget Girls high jump. From Seaforth District High School, Josh Horst took sixth in Midget Boys triple jump and Amy Hamon placed sixth in the Senior girls 400-metre hurdles. A sincere thank you to those who so willingly did the canvassing and to those who donated so generously. Mr. and Mrs. Arno Zesny of Listowel visited on Saturday, May 15 with their aunt, Olive Bolt. Marion and Kerry Calder of Scarborough visited Wednesday afternoon with Betty Irwin. \ Sellers, Melina Hussey of East Wawanosh Twp., Janet Lisle and Paula Kwan placed first in the Senior Girls 4x 100 metre relay. Hussey also earned second in the 400-metre, 1:13.5 minutes and fifth in the 100-metre in a time of 15.1 seconds. The boys were equally as suc­ cessful. Andrew Garland of Morris Twp. took second in Midget Boys javelin with a toss of 41.47 metres; second in shot put, 13.08 metres and third in discus, 36.51 metres. Brother Nathan Garland earned first in Junior Boys shot put with a put of 11.40 metres and third in discuss with 29.54 metres. Myron Hussey of East Wawanosh captured fifth in the triple jump with a jump of 11.13 metres and ninth in the long jump with a distance of 4.87 metres. He also took fifth in the Junior Boys 4x100 metre relay along with running mates Josh Ireland, Kevin Waechter and Rob Phelan. In the senior division, Sjaan Gerth of Belgrave, placed first in the 3,000-metre in a time of 9:39 minutes; first, steeple chase, 6:32 minutes; first, 1,500-metre, 4:29.7 and was a member of the 4x100 metre relay team of Jamie Good, Keil Watts and Adam Schiestel which placed second in 47.9 sec­ onds. From Listowel District Sec­ ondary School, Jeff Martin cap­ tured a record when he placed first in the 1,500-metre wheelchair event. He also took first in shot put. NOM1GO 19)482*3020 U-7 Tigers win This was the first game for the Brussels U-7 Tigers of the season. The play was back and forth fairly evenly. Gavin Bowers had a powerful kick quickly blocked by the Listowel goalie. Andrew Lindsay was in goal for Brussels to £>egin the game. Matthew Cardiff was playing a great game keeping the ball away from Brussels end. Another powerful kick from Brendan Stretton was also stopped by the Listowel goalie. Brussels did achieve two goals in the first half from Gavin Bowers and Brendan Stretton for a 2-0 lead at halftime. The second half of the game had the ball at Listowel’s end often with Cameron Schlosser getting some good plays in. Herbie Runstedler really came off powerful in the second half with fabulous kicks almost resulting in a few goals. Miles Wiseman came into his own in the second half and really played well. Goals this half were achieved by Gavin Bowers, his second of this game, Chris Becker and Robert Cronin. The final score was 5-0 for Brussels. The Tigers next game is Tuesday, May 25 at 7 p.m. at the BMG arena. Blyth Atoms suffer 5-0 loss The Blyth Atom Lightnings took to the field on May 17, but came up on the short side of a 5-0 contest against the visiting Wingham Phan­ toms. Mark McCracken had a busy night in net. High flying Adding some action to the Victoria Day weekend was the moto-cross event held at Walton on Saturday evening. Riders thrilled fans with gravity defying heights, thrills and spills. Platers play in tournament The Saugeen City Platers Major Novice team played in the Lakeshore Thunder Friendship tournament recently. In the Friday night game, the Platers took on the Mississauga Phantoms, but were downed 3-1. Chris Corbett scored the lone Plater goal. They earned their first win against the Bonnie Castle Kings from New York, Saturday morning. In the 4-2 victory, goals were scored by Conor Gill, Jeff Colton, Kevin McArter and Chris Corbett. York topped the Platers 7-5 though the team made a strong comeback attempt in the third. Going into the period down 5-1, the Platers pulled closer, but could not overtake the Selects. Goals went to Grant Cochrane, Gill and Corbett (three) Due to the point structure, the Platers ended up in third and played the second-place Phantoms again. Though they were shut out on the 3-0 loss, Platers’ goalies Tyler Beange and Andrew Hughes played good games.
