A Note from Betty
It’s unofficially summer. Firecracker Weekend ’99 is but a memory.
Camping, slumming, gardening or regular work time, hope yours was good.
The students of public and high schools are in the home stretch. A few
more projects, tests and assignments and the year is gone.
May 28 is Jump Rope for Heart day. Wander by Brussels public with your
wallet and energy and support the kids as they try to educate us on our No. I
Killer. Yes, heart and vessel disease kills many, many more folk than cancer
and accidents. So education and awareness is the purpose of the skipping.
Maybe if diet and exercise were elevated in glamour and appeal we d realize
it’s a way to live!
Did you read the paper last week about the level of our driving ability. It
said only 20 per cent of the drivers on the road now would pass a current
driver’s test. It’s not just Brussels drivers who need to be re-tested.
Bye now,
Betty G.

TIPS FOR CONSERVING
WATER
Outdoors
° water lawns and gardens no
more than once a week
0 Use a pail of soapy water to
wash your car and rinse off quickly
with the hose.
Long-term tips —
0 Cut grass less frequently and to
longer lengths. Short cuts encour
age evaporation
0 Leave grass clippings on the
lawn. They retain moisture and fer
tilize at the same time
0 Use compost, grass and leaves
as mulch on garden beds to prevent
evaporation
0 Choose trees, plants and grass
es that need less water
0 Wash your car near the lawn or
shrubs to make greater use of the
water.
The May meeting of Melville

Isaiah 40: 1-8 followed by prayer.
The topic was given by Mrs.
McNair comparing life to a garden.
Mrs. Semple read a poem about
smiles.
Several verses were read from
the booklet entitled “The Glory of
the Garden”, followed by the
singing of God Who Touches Earth
with Beauty.
Alice Marks, president opened
the business part of the meeting
with the poem “One Mother”.
Final plans were made for the
Maytime Supper which will be held
Sunday, May 30. Takeouts will be
available.
Members answered the roll call
