Prior to this spill PROTECT had met with the Minister of Agriculture to share their concerns about water quality problems associated with the expansion of large livestock confinement and liquid manure systems concentrating large volumes of manure at a single site. Members of PROTECT told McQuail there were cracks in the manure storage before the hogs were put in the bam but they were assured that the cracks would seal and not be a problem. They are frustrated that despite these assurances the manure was leaking from the tank into field tiles and into the lake. They are concerned that now that the tiles have been broken the leaking will simply move into the ground water. They would like to see wells in the area around the bam tested for contamination and are encouraging people in the area to contact the Health Unit for symptoms of illness from contaminated water. The members of PROTECT also expressed their concerns that "right to farm" legislation is being used to over-ride municipal efforts to control this real problem, that nutrient management plans do not ensure long term environmental safety and that the Ministry of the Environment has been so cut back it doesn't have adequate staff to protect water supplies. OPP campaign Continued from page 1 result of these collisions, three people will die - one person every nine hours. “Aggressive driving is everyone’s problem. Be a part of the solution,” said Shropshall. Farmers encouraged to be safe, be seen With spring, comes a dramatic increase in the volume of farm equipment travelling Ontario's roadways. Accidents involving slow moving farm machinery and motor vehicles continues to be of great concern to the Farm Safety Association. Farmers can take a number of steps to improve visibility of their equipment and reduce the chances of a collision occurring. The Canadian Standards Association has issued a new standard on the slow moving vehicle identification emblem. The new standard, #M67l-99 (ASAE S276.5 Nov.97), helps increase the visibility of the sign using newer highly reflective materials. Adoption of the ASAE standard will aid in the promotion and uniformity of the marking of agricultural machinery on roadways across North America. The new sign is 14 times brighter than the old emblem. This standard was reviewed for Canadian adoption by the CSA technical committee on agricultural machinery. Although the standard has been adopted, it does not have the force of law. However, due to the highly increased visibility of the reflective material used on the new signs, farmers should consider the new standard SMV signs when replacing signs on agricultural equipment. The Farm Safety Association also encourages farmers to mark their equipment with reflective tape to increase visibility when travelling after dark.
