H. Elliott hosts WMS
Nearer to God
The church perchers, from left: Ralph Watson, Warren Wray and Don Crawford had an
excellent view of the activities during the Brussels United Church spring fling, from their
perch atop the church. A fundraiser for the access lift, the trio brought in over $1,000.
Getting them to the top was a truck, donated by Les Bernard. Other events included a
petting zoo, face painting, plant sale and wagon rides.
The May meeting of Melville
Church Women’s Missionary
Society was held at the home of
Helen Elliott.
Leona Armstrong, who was in
charge of devotions, chose the
Mother's Day theme. Isobel Gibson
read the scripture reading from
Proverbs 30: 10-29. Mrs.
Armstrong told about several
women of the Bible who had many
different talents which have taught
lessons of the past.
Verses containing the word
‘mother’ were read in response to
the roll call.
A donation was given to the
Kosovo Relief Fund.
Mrs. Elliott gave a report on the
Mission Festival held in
Kincardine.
The Brussels Society is
responsible for 75 little bags of
cookies for the Children’s Rally at
Camp Kintail on June 9.
A video on refugees entitled “No
Place to Call Home” was presented
by Mrs. Elliott. Rev. Cathrine
Campbell closed the meeting with
prayer.

Finding the promised land
By Les Cook
Blyth Community
Church of God
Moses led the people of Israel
out of Egypt after 400 years of
slavery. Four hundred years of hard
labour, mistreatment and bondage,
a tribe of once free, proud and
productive people set apart by God
to be his chosen people.
God performed many signs and
miracles and provided protection
day and night. He led them, via
Moses, to the promised land or you
might say the land of promise, a
land flowing with milk and honey.
This land contained all the
ingredients the Israelites needed to
have a new beginning as free,
proud and productive people. A
land that was the fulfillment of all
God’s promises.
All they had to do was go in and
take the land. All they needed to do
was believe that God was on their
side and that He wanted them to
possess it.
But these chosen Israelite people
would never enter the land of
promise.
Why not? After 40 years of
slavery they were surely keen to be
free, to have land and abundance,
status, write their own agenda and
be self governed. They left Egypt,
travelled across the desert with
their families, livestock, cooking
pots, everything they owned
because they had every intention of
entering the land God had promised
them.
So why not? What was it that
stopped them?
Before we answer that, let’s ask
ourselves a pertinent question,
Where is my promised land? What
is it deep inside you that has not yet
been manifested? What great and
wonderful thing has God given you
to do that you have not yet begun?
The fulfillment of that task is
your promised land. What is the
milk and honey we find? It is what
we become along the way. All of us
have much more potential in us
than we know. We have the ability
to become the person only God
knows we can be. We can be sure
that it’s the new challenges in life
that encourage us to develop.
It’s been said that if you’re still
talking about what you did
yesterday you just haven’t done
anything worthwhile today. As we
take on new challenges we discover
new strengths and talents that God
has given us for when the need is
there.
The Israelites fell into the trap of
disbelief. They not only refused to
believe in themselves they also
stopped believing God wanted the
best for them. So entering the
promised land became frightening
to them. And that fear manifested
excuses, with the exception of two
young leaders Joshua and Caleb
who refused to make excuses and
instead focused on God’s promise
to deliver to them the promised
land.
We can move into the land of
promise or we can make excuses,
but we can’t do both.
Qod has given each one of us a
promised land, a place where, we
can discover our true potential by
relying on God’s power and the
knowledge that he wants the very
best for our lives. God does not put
desires in our hearts that with His
help we are unable to accomplish.
When we follow Joshua and
Caleb’s example to stand on the
promises of God the land of
promise is ours for the taking.
you are. ‘Welcome at the
