Joe Hallahan directed traffic as John Elliott and Graham Jackson transported everyone interested, by horse and buggy to and from the Radford Pond. Compliments of Doug Scrimgeour, a shovel was provided for... you know! The vehicles were parked on the road that leads back to Radford’s Gravel Pit. Having grown up in Port Albert, one of Huron County’s well known areas for fishing, I had learned that fish bite for two reasons: they are hungry, or it’s going to rain. Obviously they were hungry with the result of 134 fish being caught and we did get a good downpour through the night. The Blyth Fire Department with Paul Josling and Bill Burkholder were present with the emergency van for people to browse through. Ted East was there on behalf of the Bluewater Shrine Club selling 10 lb. bags of onions. The proceeds go to crippled children, a very worthwhile cause. Brenda Burkholder and Kathy Bromley had a table set up representing the North Huron Community Policing Committee, to bring awareness to the public and get more people involved in helping their community. Tickets were handed out for the children fishing and numerous gate prizes were won. The fish were cleaned by Robert Charter, Jerrod Button and John Bjerg. The winners were: largest fish, ages two to five, Brandon Tyson and Jeanna Riley; six to nine, Chris Bjerg and Amanda Gorel; 10 - 12 Nick Dale and Hailey Hulzebos; 13-15 Jason Stryker and Mary Finlayson. In the smallest fish category, the winners were: ages two to five, Kyle East and Mitchell Depatie and McKenzie McGavin; six to nine, Derek Youngblut and Meagan Root; 10 - 12, Allison George and Jenna Rinn; 13 - 15, Taylor Hesselwood and Mary Finlayson. The prizes were donated by Canadian Tire and Blyth Legion, with lots of fishing gear handed out. Pop and hot dogs were compliments of the Blyth Legion, Branch 420 with Comrade Pat Jenkins overlooking everything and ensuring that everything went smoothly. (By the way, Happy Anniversary Pat and Gord). A very special thanks to Doug and Diane Scrimgeour and family for all the time, money and effort they donated towards another enjoyable fishing derby. Please plan to come out again next year everyone.
