The late Queen Vic Betty Graber rang the bell to welcome Queen Victoria (aka Joan Jacobs) to the Brussels United Church’s spring fling on Saturday. Her majesty was quite impressed by the church perchers, who spent four hours looking down from above to raise funds for the new access lift. A Note from Betty Well, bless my pansies, we’ve had some rain. What a nice sight, a puddle in the driveway. Keep it coming for a few more hours. Congratulations to Gordon and Helen Blake on their 50th anniversary. It’s okay Gordon, you can now tell everyone what it’s like to live with a Callander Girl since you now had 50 years experience! Good to see Ralph Pearson. Ida Evans and Jane DeVries on the sidewalks of Brussels again. Now keep well you three! Good breakfast at the Legion on Sunday. They should think about advertising the chef(s) of the day. The ones this time, were certainly well worth watching - cook! Queen Victoria was at the United Church on Saturday celebrating with the Church Perchers. She was so impressed with their stamina for roof sitting that she arranged for a good Catholic sword and duly knighted them, Sir Donald, Sir Ralph and Sir Warren. By the way her orthopedic shoes didn’t just cut it with the tiara from Morris Twp. and the lace gloves and velvet dress from elsewhere. If you’re walking on Mill Street on Thursday pause at Helen’s house and sing birthday greetings to her in your finest voice. Enjoy the long weekend with a few firecrackers and friends. Bye now. Betty Optimists host special night Plan could put Brussels on tourist map The Brussels Optimists have been busy cleaning up the Maitland Valley Conservation Park, on the north side of the dam, and proud of their efforts they want to throw a party. On Monday, May 24, they invite the public to join them for hot dogs between 7:30-8:30 p.m. People can stroll through the park and take notice of the recent installation of lights and washrooms. At dusk they invite everyone to share fireworks with the Optimists and their families. Bev Brown approached council recently about the trees which have been cut down. She suggested that rather than completely remove them, the stumps be transformed through chainsaw sculpture into tourist attractions, similar to that on a Turnberry Street’property. “I as at Expo ‘67 in Montreal and I saw these gorgeous sculptures. When Eric (Ross) and Debbie (Trollope) had the one done at their home the idea hit me.” Though council felt the project was a good one, they didn’t feel it was up to them.. Clerk-Treasurer Donna White then took it to the business group, who also agreed it was a sound idea. But the problem is where to get the funding. Sculpting the trees costs $100 a foot, then there will be maintenance. “The plan is to try to do one a year,” said White. “From the busi ness meeting there has been general interest growing in the idea with one or two individuals already say ing they would contribute.” This was what was done in Hope, B.C., said Brown, where carvings PLEASE GIVE 1 888 321 3433 The Brussels Public School Advisory Council would like to thank the Lions Club for their generous donation towards the new playground equipment.
