While cutbacks and closures have reduced the number of hospital beds across the country, the population is aging. As the first wave of boomers become seniors in 2011, Canada will have about 5 million people aged 65 or older. That figure will climb to about 9 million by 2031. "Across our 71 offices in Canada, we're seeing more and more cases where the terminally ill are expressing a desire to die at home where they are in familiar surroundings and with loved ones close by." McMaster said. We Care has responded to this growing need by making a broad range ot palliative home care services available. Our services include professional nursing care; homemaking to help with daily chores around the house; personal care; and relief for family caregivers and they can be used to complement available government home care and volunteer palliative care programs. McMaster also reminds people that dying at home was common practice until about mid-20th century. "But with smaller families today, and with the sandwich generation now having to care for elderly patients as well as dependent children, the availability of professional support is important in order to help families cope with the demands of taking care of someone who is terminally ill."
