Help in caring
for terminally ill
Increasingly, terminally-ill
patients are asking to die at home.
But often these wishes go
unfulfilled because family
members, unless they receive the
necessary support, are unable to
cope.
"The problem is the same right
across this country. One of the
biggest obstacles to dying at home
is the severe strain this places on
families," said Bev McMaster who,
as president of We Care Health
Services Inc., represents Canada's
largest independently-owned home
care network with 5,000 home care
professionals serving 30,000 clients
a year.
"The’family caregivers are under
great emotional and psychological
stress, and they are often physically
exhausted," she said. "According to
some studies, these caregivers may
in fact experience greater anxiety
and depression than the terminally-
ill patient."
According to a recent Angus
Reid study, 84 per cent of
Canadians surveyed said it is
important for terminally-ill patients
to be able to spend their final days
in comfort and
surroundings. Yet
Palliative Care
estimates that 70 to
the terminally ill in this country die
in hospital.
McMaster advises people
wanting to care for a dying family
member at home to be prepared.
"Careful planning in consultation
with the family and various health
care professionals is very
important, and it is equally
essential to ensure that family
members have access to the support
and respite services they need."

Cooking for the masses
Getting down to the task seemed to make it easier for
Brandon Anger when the Brussels Mennonite youth
served up a delicious roast beef dinner on Saturday night.
