Hurricanes bring home medals The Huron Hurricanes who are 13 or over and who have achieved qualifying times attended a meet in London called the Hollandia invitational. Qualifying times are the top 10 per cent of swims for the preceding year. Those in attendance were: Sarah Datema, Meghan Morris, Allison and Brittany Segeren, Aaron Datars, and Scott McNichol. Congratulations to all of those who qualified to go. In the 13 and 14-year-old division, Brittany Segeren won silver in the 100-metre butterfly and bronze in the 400-metre freestyle. She placed fourth in the 200-metre butterfly and fifth in both the 200-metre individual medley and the 200-metre freestlye. Meghan Morris placed eighth in the 50-metre freestyle. Aaron Datars placed sixth in both the 200 breaststroke, and the 200 backstroke. He placed eighth in the 100 breaststroke. Scott McNichol placed fifth in the 200-metre breaststroke and sixth in the 100-metre breaststroke. Optimists host golf tourney Any children with some golfing experience who would like to enter a local golf tournament, now have the chance. The Optimist Clubs of Wingham and Clinton are each hosting their own Junior Golf Tournament. These tournaments are open to boys and girls competing in several categories: 11 and under, 12 and 13 year-olds, 14-15 year-olds, 16-18 year-olds. The Wingham Tournament will be held on May 22 at 10 a.m. at the Wingham Golf and Curling Club. Competitors will play nine holes. The Clinton Tournament will be held on June 12 at the new "Woodland Link Golf Course". This is an 18-hole tournament. Winners have a chance to advance to the Midwestern District. This is followed by the All-Ontario then the National Tournament. The Blyth Optimist Club will pay part of the child's fee for this tournament. For more information contact Fred deBoer 523-9500. Tricky skipping Candace Poisson, a Grade 7 student from Seaforth Public School was just one of a team of trick jumpers who visited Brussels Public School Friday to show off their talents. The Jump Rope for heart jump team was getting Brussels students pumped for their May 28 skip-athon. Pedal to health when Big Bike conies to town The opportunity to pedal to good health, have a lot of fun and con­ tribute to the Heart and Stroke Foundation will be coming to Huron County this summer. The Big Bike for Stroke, a 30- seater, will offer rides to fundrais­ ers in the Lucknow. Goderich, Clinton and Exeter area, July 1, and come to Wingham, July 2. To reserve a seat on the bike, an individual, organization or compa­ ny has to raise a minimum of $50 for Heart and Stroke. Organizers encourage companies to get the whole group working together, promote the business, wear costumes, sing songs and have fun. The more money raised, the more prizes to be won. A $50 donation earns riders a cap while $135 hits the bonus level and receives a cap, t-shirt and cooler bag. This 18-hole Texas scramble tournament is popular with both men and women golfers and last year it was almost a complete sell­ out' Proceeds from the tournament, which is generously sponsored by Horizon Pro Health in Stratford and Clinton and Berny Nymeyer of RBC Dominion Securities, support the many community health education programs of The Lung Association in Huron-Perth. Until May 25, the registration fee is $60 per person for a wonderful day of golf and a great steak dinner, plus an additional optional $10 prize fee. After May 25, the entry fee is $65 per person, plus the additional optional $10 prize fee. Anyone having purchased a 1999 Golf Privilege Card from The Lung Association, will find it contains a $5 discount coupon off the entry fee. A tax receipt for a portion of the registration fee will be issued to all participants. The list of 1999 prizes includes one and two-night getaways for two in Toronto, Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, London and Bayfield and the Hole In One Prize' is the use of a great new Ford product.
