Seniors
hear of
Fiji
The Blyth Swinging Seniors met
in the Blyth Memorial Hall on
April 28 with the Belgrave Seniors
as guests. A dessert luncheon
followed at 1 p.m.
After lunch President Lawrence
Plaetzer welcomed all and called
the meeting to order which opened
with O Canada with Elva Brown at
the piano. A sing-a-long followed
led by Aubrey Toll and Vera
Badley.
The birthdays of the month were
Alice Nicholson of Belgrave, Feme
McDowell and David Sparling of
Blyth. All sang Happy Birthday.
There were no anniversaries in
April.
Mary Walden introduced David
Sparling as the special speaker. He
was married recently and he and
Annie decided to go to the Fiji
Islands for their honeymoon. Fiji is
off the coast of Australia. He began
telling some early history of the
islands. Cannibalism was practised.
When the British arrived they
built the best port in the South
Pacific. They brought in workers
from India and the sugar cane
industry flourished.
The main religions were
Christian, Muslim and Hindu.
Everything prospered until the
1980s when problems in
government happened and a coup
was formed and laws were
changed. Wealthy businessmen
went back to India and there was
much unemployment.
Recently Fiji has been readmitted
to the British consulate. Though
there is still poverty they still have
some sugar cane, grow pineapples
and run a tourist business. The
people are happy.
David and Annie enjoyed their
time in Fiji and even went up in an
air balloon.
Ruth Jardin gave a very timely
reading, "Income Tax time"
Jean Nethery reported on the
seniors' trip to Hamilton on June 16
to the Gertiol Follies.
Several lucky draws were made.
Mabel Wheeler thanked Blyth for
the invitation and an interesting
afternoon.

Blyth volunteers on the Town & Country Homemakers advisory committee were recently
recognized for their service. They had a chance to stop for a picture while preparing the
meal last week for the Dining Out program. From left: Toni Vos, Leah Davis, the Home Care
co-ordinator, Kathy Bromley and Lenora Davidson. Not pictured were Vera Badley and
Adrian Vos, who was out delivering meals.
Kathy’s Korner
By Kathy Bromley
On Friday, May 7 there were 34 people in attendance at the Blyth
Anglican Church for the monthly meal put on by Town and Country
Support Services.
The nutritious meal consisted of sweet and sour meatballs, mushroom
fried rice, oven-roasted potatoes, ginger-baby carrots and coleslaw. This was
topped off with a rhubarb cake dessert.
One meal was delivered.
Following the meal, Happy Birthday was sung to Bemice Anderson of
Auburn and Renny Hulzebos, while Happy Anniversary was sung to Kathy
Bromley.
Winners of the door prizes donated by Isabel Craig, were won by Kathy
Bromley and Feme Howatt. John Hesselwood was the lucky winner of the
50/50 draw.
The guest for the afternoon was Sandra Giesbrecht, a registered
reflexologist in Listowel and the past president of the Reflexology
Association of Canada, which began in 1970. She gave an excellent speech,
told of the various functions of the body and outlined the areas that control
relaxation.
Did you know that applying pressure to the top section of your fingertips
helps to eliminate sinus problems?
She donated numerous prizes. The winners were: Jake Hulzebos who won
foot cream, sun breeze oil went to Lois Haines and gift certificates went to
Maria Haggitt and Mary Walden who will receive a free reflexology
treatment.
Leah Davis thanked Sandra for the presentation.
Kathy's Quote of the Week: The average person has 66 lbs. of muscles, 40
lbs. of bones and 3 l/4 lbs. of brain - which seems to explain a lot of things.
YO assaults youth in Blyth
On May 2, an assault was
reported occurring on Queen Street
in Blyth'.
The victim told police that he
was walking on the street when
approached by a male. An
argument took place, and the victim
attempted to walk away. As he was
leaving he was struck in the head
several times.
The victim said there were others
on the street who had seen the
assault. Statements were obtained
from them before the officer
attended the suspect's residence.
A 17-year-old male was arrested
and taken to the Goderich OPP
detachment. He was charged with
assault and released on a promise to
appear for court in Goderich on
June 10 with conditions not to go
near the victim.
