Seniors hear of Fiji The Blyth Swinging Seniors met in the Blyth Memorial Hall on April 28 with the Belgrave Seniors as guests. A dessert luncheon followed at 1 p.m. After lunch President Lawrence Plaetzer welcomed all and called the meeting to order which opened with O Canada with Elva Brown at the piano. A sing-a-long followed led by Aubrey Toll and Vera Badley. The birthdays of the month were Alice Nicholson of Belgrave, Feme McDowell and David Sparling of Blyth. All sang Happy Birthday. There were no anniversaries in April. Mary Walden introduced David Sparling as the special speaker. He was married recently and he and Annie decided to go to the Fiji Islands for their honeymoon. Fiji is off the coast of Australia. He began telling some early history of the islands. Cannibalism was practised. When the British arrived they built the best port in the South Pacific. They brought in workers from India and the sugar cane industry flourished. The main religions were Christian, Muslim and Hindu. Everything prospered until the 1980s when problems in government happened and a coup was formed and laws were changed. Wealthy businessmen went back to India and there was much unemployment. Recently Fiji has been readmitted to the British consulate. Though there is still poverty they still have some sugar cane, grow pineapples and run a tourist business. The people are happy. David and Annie enjoyed their time in Fiji and even went up in an air balloon. Ruth Jardin gave a very timely reading, "Income Tax time" Jean Nethery reported on the seniors' trip to Hamilton on June 16 to the Gertiol Follies. Several lucky draws were made. Mabel Wheeler thanked Blyth for the invitation and an interesting afternoon. BBA sponsors blooming raffle The Blyth Business Association is sponsoring an awareness raffle.
