The county system will also receive $9,000 for a com puter router to connect the Network 2000 Virtual Library server to the internet. *** The county’s decision to bring the office of tree commissioner and weed inspector under the highways department has proved popular with landowners and timber com panies, a report from the Agricul ture and Public Works Committee says. The report said the perception that all highways department employees were keeping a lookout for logging activities has led to many more contacts by contractors anxious to make sure they are com plying with the tree-cutting bylaw. There have also been more applica tions for minor exceptions in the first four months than in all of 1998. A minor exception is required when a landowner wants to remove part of a bush, such as wanting to square up a field. When a county official visits a woodlot the landowner is encour aged to go along on the inspection, making it an educational opportuni ty on proper woodlot management. Council supported a resolution from the Town of Oakville calling for the province to identify how municipal and community groups' investments in local schools can be protected if the schools are closed and disposed of. Clerk-Administrator Lynn Mur ray told council the Avon-Maitland District Board of Education is also concerned about the issue.*** County council passed a motion congratulating the Blyth Festival on its 25th anniversary season in 1999.
