J tome Garden 1999 TV hosts offer tips for backyard bliss (NC) - As hosts of HGTV Canada's Calling All Gardeners - Canada’s first live gardening show - Kathy Renwald and Mark Cullen are used to solving all sorts of backyard dilemmas. Here they share some ideas to make your garden look its best: • Remember that falling mercury can be dangerous at this time of year. Insulate tender plants by covering them up. Dried peat moss, leaf mould, compost or even an old car blanket will keep the heat in. • Add compost to sandy or clay based garden soil. In sandy soil, the compost will help particles bind together, allowing the soil to retain water longer. In clay soil, the compost will do the opposite, breaking up particles and allowing water to drain through more efficiently. • If you find gnats in your compost, it may be too wet. Keep it dry by covering the heap with soil each time you add new scraps. • To emphasize small plants, place them close to a door or path where they will be more visible. • To shape a tree, hang rocks of different weights from the branches. Two great ideas for planting an herb garden this summer: • Lay down an old ladder and plant different varieties of herbs between the rungs. • Plant an herb garden in half a barrel. This will yield more than enough herbs for summer consumption. Calling All Gardeners is one of several premier gardening series airing on HGTV Canada. According to the expert host of HGTV Canada's In the Workshop, one of the first things to keep in mind is good lighting. Whether you're carving, using a scroll saw, turning on a lathe or working on- the band saw, you can never have enough light. Not only does it make for safer and more accurate work, it also keeps you alert and free from fatigue when working on small parts. Keeping the room well- vented with a good supply of fresh air will also help. And remember that a clean shop is a safe shop. The fewer extension cords on the floor the safer you'll be. Not having to worry about stepping around cords or getting caught up in them reduces the chances of tripping or falling, which can result in serious injury. Besides, it will allow you to focus all of your attention on the task at hand. Although you may assume you know how to use a tool, make sure by reading the instruction manual first. Tool companies are forever changing the quality and functions of their products as they improve them. Learning about the tool before you use it will not only increase your proficiency with it but will also ensure your safety. And speaking of safety, always unplug a tool before changing blades or bits. Similarly, kill the power in battery-operated equipment. Any unattended tools should always be unplugged and kept away from children. Once everything is unplugged, separate the extension cord and keep a good distance between the end of the tool plug and the wall socket. - News Canada Install Smoke Alarms IT’S THE LAW, The Ontario Fire Code requires that every home have working smoke alarms. *\Ne Do Not Telephone Solicit awtj Master Landscape Construction and Maintenance We can make your dreams a reality • Full landscape design & installation • Interlocking patios & walkways • Wood decks, stonework • Windbreaks • Farmstead landscapes • Seeding & sodding Our custom design, expert installation and regular maintenance guarantee lasting beauty that you'll enjoy for years to come.
