Shocking what some people do to their plants (NC) — Transplanting everything from seedlings and bedding plants to shrubs and even large trees can be a deadly experience for the plants involved. The culprit is transplant shock, and it's responsible for the untimely death of many plants that were perfectly healthy when they were brought home from the nursery or garden centre. Imagine yourself plucked from your happy home and dropped in the middle of a strange land, complete with an equally strange diet, that either sets your digestive tract on fire — or is about as nourishing as bread and water. Sound outrageous? You bet it does! Well, that’s pretty much what you're doing when you dig a hole, drop a plant in it, and splash a bit of water on top. For even the hardiest of plants, transplant survival becomes an uphill battle. The good news is that you can greatly minimize the risk of plant transplant shock simply by using a uniquely formulated, transplanting fertilizer. Choose a good one and it’ll not only save your plants — it'll also save you a lot of time, work, frustration, and money. The best of these specialty products usually have a high- phosphorous content, which dramatically lessens the risk of transplant shock. Concentrated plant hormones and selected starter nutrients actively promote germination and growth in seed beds, as well as healthy root development in mature trees, shrubs, and root stock.
