The Citizen, 1999-05-05, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 5, 1999.
A Note from Betty
Hurrah. Hurrah tor the first of May! Finish the ditty at the level of your
interest. It has lots ot endings as I'm sure you know but perhaps have
forgotten.
The volunteer day at 5R's was well attended last week, thanking the many
folk who give their precious time to make our community a better place.
The 5R's is special from its very beginnings. Where else but Brussels could
you get someone to buy a store for the use of volunteers, for the expressed
use of improving our community? That was 1991. The store was oft to a
great start and so continues to provide affordable clothing as well as many
other services that change by the month.
Thanks to the folk who spend time there. It is the only place in town
where religion, age and politics are ignored so that work can be done. Keep
up the good work staff and volunteers at 5R’s.
The death of Hugh Pearson this week brought back memories. He was at
the sales barn when I came to town but before that he was known for
coaching an energetic women's bail team that included his wife Donelda as
well as the Shaw twins. He also had a shoe store on main street and later
kept fine horses.
His is one of the names that brings a smile or a story when thought of, as
do the names Jack, Doc, Anne, Bruce, Arch, Cal, Evelyn, Roy and many
more that gave Brussels its personality.
Spring has brought the salesmen to town. Be ready with your NO
THANKS when they want into your home to show products. If you decide
to listen to their pitch - at the very least have company with you. Their job
is sales and they expect to win. Be aware.
Many folk were pleased with their purchases from the Legion's Auction
last Saturday. Lots of treasures to bid for and if you were persistent you
went home with the goodies.
I'm not sure that the red toilet seat got to the proper home.
Sorry, the name of Christine Bone was omitted as one of the first-place
winners from the Walkerton Music Festival.
Bye now,
Congrats
