Madill students learn co-operatively
By I.visa McCall
Hi. My name is
Leisa McCall and I
am a Grade 12
student at F. E.
Madill Secondary
School currently
enrolled in co
operative education. My placement
is at Bridge Motors which is
located just outside of Wingham on
Highway 86. Bridge Motors is a
Ford dealership and I work in the
office as I am very interested in
business, particularly accounting.
My supervisor. Scott Bridge has
provided me with the opportunity
of a lifetime. Never did I expect to
accomplish as much as I have in
such a short period of time. This
gives me a real taste of what the
accounting branch of business is
really like, and I love it! My daily
tasks include answering the
telephone and participating in many
daily bookkeeping duties.
I chose this co-op course because
I knew I liked the idea of
accounting but before I decide what
I want to do at college, 1 want to be
sure accounting is for me. I believe
everyone who can, should take
advantage of a co-op course at their
school.
So far, I love what I’m doing and
it’s going to be very difficult to say
goodbye to all my co-workers
come June. Thanks again to
everyone at Bridge Motors for
giving me this opportunity.

Millions of Canadians remember
Terry Fox and his Marathon of
Hope in 1980. Today, children,
teenagers and new Canadians learn
about him in their history lessons.
This 22-year-old man from British
Columbia symbolized unselfish
ness, perseverance and courage.
Terry Fox is truly a modern-day
hero that Canadians can call their
own.
In Ontario, there are 243 Terry
Fox Run locations. However, one
area that is severely under-
represented is Bly th.
The Terry Fox Foundation is
seeking volunteers from Blyth to
organize a new Run site. With
Blyth's extensive green space, the
results from a new location could
be spectacular. The experienced
staff at the Foundation is ready to
assist with all the details in
establishing a new site. This is an
exciting opportunity to help raise
awareness in the fight against
cancer and to create community
involvement.
The Terry Fox Run will be held
on Sunday, Sept. 19 this year with
an expected 100,000 Canadians
participating.
Cancer treatment has had some
great results since Terry’s Run in
1980, but more money is needed to
fund the research and find a cure
for this disease. Blyth may make
the difference.
several different tasks. I have

and dogs, walked the dogs, went
out on farm calls with Max.
mopped the floors, put the garbage
out, put medication away and I
have also had the chance to watch
spays and neuters.
The reason I have chosen co-op
is because I want to get a better
look at real life work experiences,
being able to see and do the things I
may have to do if I become a
veterinarian assistant. I hope to
gain a better understanding of this
field of work.
I would like to take this chance to
show my appreciation to my
supervisors at the clinic: Sherry
Taylor, Max VonHerbing, Dale
Taylor and Brenda Renwick. They
have all helped me grow in
knowledge and have given me the
chance to see and do real life
veterinary procedures.
Thanks for making me feel at
home and thanks for your support.

I am in the co-op
program at F. E.
Madill Secondary
School.
I am interested in
electronics so I
thought what better
way to understand them than to
become familiar with electricity. I
was lucky enough to be accepted
by a local electrician Frank
Workman who has had co-op
students before. He allows me to
work with him. from 1 - 3:30 p m.
Monday to Friday. .
I am learning a lot from Frank.
So far I am able to wire receptacles,
switches and several other things
with help from Frank.
The co-op program has been very
worthwhile to me. I am glad I
chose such an interesting field.
I would like to thank the owners
of Frank Workman Electrical for
accepting me so graciously into
their workplace.

The Grade 4 students are

In social studies, everyone has
been learning about Canada's 10
provinces and three territories.
Students have just completed a
research project with a partner
about either a province or territory
of Canada.
Interesting information packages
are arriving in response to students’
letters sent to the tourist bureau of
their chosen province or territory.
Since many have received maps,
they may convince their families to
vacation in distant parts of Canada
this summer.
Because of Grade 3 testing Mrs.
Grail has "borrowed" the Grade 3
students for two days to administer
previews of the upcoming
provincial tests. Students are being
given a "sneak preview" of what
they will be expected to do in early
May.
This will be the third year that
children of this age have been
assessed in reading, writing and
mathematics to see how they
compare with all Ontario students
