Championship season The Saugeen-Maitland Lightning Midgets topped off a great season with a championship title. The girls hockey team earned the OWHA "A" division title at a tournament in Mississauga Midget Lightning OWHA champs A very successful season came to a fitting end when Saugeen-Maitland Lightning Midget girls hockey player Carla Hunt of Ethel helped the team capture a double­ overtime win to take the OWHA "A” division champi­ onship. Playing in Mississauga, the squad earned the first provin­ cial title for the group. After completing round­ robin play with a 2-0-1 record, the Lightning took on the Algoma Wildcats in the division final. Having received great goal­ tending from Tammy Ellis throughout the tournament, the squads were forced into a second over-time to deter­ mine the champs. The game winner came resulted Wildcat Janine when Hunt stopped a Wildcat rush at the blueline. Picking up the loose puck, she raced down the right side, veering into the centre at her opponent's blueline. Her low wrist shot in a rebound off the goalie, setting up Wright for another attempt. Tiffany Roetcisoender cap­ tured silver in the yellow belt kata while Travis Roetcisoender earned bronze in the yellow belt kata and fourth in the kumite. Local track athletes do well It was an exceptional day for the F.E. Madill track team when they competed in the Resurrection High School Track War in Kitchener recently. The Midget competitors excelled, bringing home 12 medals. Kristyn Gerth of Belgrave, took first in shot put with a toss of 9.832 metres and eighth in javelin at 15.99 metres. East Wawanosh's Amanda Palmer placed third in the 100 metres with a time of 13.4 and earned sixth in long jump at 4.19 metres. Fifths in long jump with 4.25 metres and the 400 metres in a time of 1:09.2 were captured by Laura Meier, East Wawanosh. Palmer and Meier, along with Rebecca Bruton and Sonja Spaling, ran to a gold in the midget girls relay with a time of 55 seconds. Andrew Garland, Morris Twp., took third in shot put with a throw of 12.88 metres, and third in javelin with a toss of 30.50 metres. Senior Sjaan Gerth, Belgrave, placed third in the 2,000 metre steeple chase in a time of 6:29 and sixth in the 1,500 metre steeple chase, in 4:29 minutes. Madill boys curl­ ing rink, skipped by Craig Fair of Bluevale, captured sixth at the OFSAA champi­ onship. Competing against 15 teams at the Avonlea Curling Club in Toronto, the rink took irs first match against a Scarborough school 12-4. They were downed 6-1 in the second round and doubled 4-2 in the final game. In the consolation quarter finals. Fair's rink blanked South Carleton High School, Richmond Hill, 15-0, then beat Lome Park 7-5 in the semis. Dryden slipped by them, 5- 4, in the final.
